Hi we are coming to Lucerne for just over a week. We fly to Basel then we will train to Baden Baden for a few days before we train back to Lucerne for a week. We will train back to UK via Strasbourg and Lille.

Im wondering if it’s best to get a Swiss Pass or a TellPass or get three days of each and also if we can do any of our existing travel as above using these.

We have been to Lucerne before and visited the local mountain a and Interlaken by yratr and would love to do some of the classic Swiss glacier routes but wonder if they are possible in a day?

Any thoughts gratefully received

Hi Cherry Margo and welcome to MySwissAlps!

The Tell Pass (https://www.myswissalp s.com/tellpass) is great if your trips are focused on the Lucerne area – but it sounds like you want to explore more of Switzerland? If so I’d stay somewhere other than Lucerne as it will make a lot of the trips much shorter.

Perhaps a location like Montreux or Zermatt would work for you better (if you are flexible and not locked into Lucerne)

As for glacier routes I’m not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the Glacier Express panoramic train? Or another train? https://www.myswissalp s.com/activities/sceni ctrips/train

Before you can decide on the best rail pass though, you must plan out your trips while in Switzerland first.

Then you can compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂

Thank you for your detailed abd helpful response. We are staying in an apartment in Lucerne though so most if not all of our trips will need to start and finish there

So it sounds like most of your trips will be outside Luzern (and out of the Tell Pass validity area?). You’ll want to take a look at just the 8 day Swiss Travel Pass then I think.

You can compare the coverage areas of each pass here:

Once you’ve made your itinerary you can see how much of the trips are covered by the Tell Pass. Maybe 1/2 of the trip or 1/4 of the trip or none of the trip.
