    Hello,

we are visiting Lucerne first week of August and our plan is to park at Kriens, hike all the way up to Pilatus Kulm and from there take the cable car back to Kriens.

I noticed they sell this one-way ticket online but we are not yet sure which exact day we will take this trip. Is it necessary to book it in advance or can we just come to the box office and buy the ticket on the spot? We would not want to hike all the way up to realize they won’t sell us the ticket and have to make the descent back down on foot unplanned.

    Thank you!

Hi Pepik24 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

There is no need to book your tickets in advance, no worries. You can read more about the tickets here: http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus/tickets.

Are you going to have a rail pass? If you have a valid pass, like the Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card, you can buy your tickets discounted (50% off). Read more about these passes at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass and http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard. (there is a 25% off promotion on the Swiss Travel Passes if you buy them in July details can be found here: http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/swiss-travel-pass-25-off-for-trips-in-20212022)

It will be a great hike, here you’ll find some tips regarding hiking in Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking

Hope this helps, let me know if you have further questions.

    Hi Pepik24,

Wow, that is some hike there, be aware that it gets very, very, steep up towards the top of Pilatus. I wish I could pull that off, and am envious. Be sure to check out the Klimsenkapelle, which is a little church perched right on the edge of one of the hills you are probably going to pass on your way up from Kriens. Maybe use it as a picnic place for lunch on the way, and a rest spot. I wanted to hike down to it from the top, but was concerned about being able to make it back. I’d start out early, and don’t worry about getting a ticket down until you’re up there. Just make sure you’re up there before the last descent (I believe about 1640, or 1700) or you may have to spend the night at the Kulm. (Which isn’t a bad thing). Check out the schedule on the link from Ildiko. It’s definitely going to be a great day. It’s a beautiful excursion up there. Enjoy it!

Attached are pics of the church.
