G’day all, looking for a bit of help regarding the Pilatus Golden Round Trip. We are visiting Lucerne in September of this year and was wondering if you are restricted to a time schedule or can you take any of the different modes to get up and down the mountain at your leisure. It would be nice to stay at the top of the mountain for a bit longer rather than trying to rush back down. We want to suck up as much as possible.

    Thanks for any help.

    Bill from Melbourne Australia.

Hi Bill, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

The Golden Round trip is just a marketing name or shorthand term to distinguish one particular route from other possible routes i.e.

    • Boat to Alpnachstad
    • Cogwheel to Pilatus
    • Cable car and gondola to Kriens
    • Bus to Luzern

    https://www.myswissalp s.com/pilatus/gettingt here
This can also be done in reverse.

It is totally up to you how long you spend on top of Pilatus. The last connection down to Kriens on the cableway leaves Pilatus Kulm at 17:30. The last cogwheel train down from Pilatus Kulm to Alpnachstad leaves at 17:45.

You can use the Swiss Timetable to plan your trip:

Use the one on the right with the red SBB logo, and read the instructions first for the best results.

G’day Bill from Melbourne and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

You can be as flexible as you please and spend as much time up top as you like. The Pilatus ticket (not tied to any specific departure time) just covers Kriens to Alpnachstad. Rest is just public transport.

    Have a read of a fellow Aussie’s experience at http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/the-reluctant-travellers-swiss-adventure-part-6.

    Enjoy.

Thank you for your replies. Good to hear that we can take our time and take in as much as possible. We are early risers so we will get out first thing. This is our first trip to Switzerland and we are looking forward to it so much. We have heard so many good things we just had to go. Let’s hope for a good clear day on the Mountain, but anyway it comes, it’s going to be so good.

    Thanks again, Bill.

    hi Everone

Travelling to Lucerne in sep 1st week and intend to cover mount Pilatus. Will be travelling with my 4.5 year old and a 6 month old . Could you advise about following

    1. Is Pilatus altitude safe for children 4.years plus

2.We intend to take boat to Alpnachstad and then the cogwheel train round trip. My mum would stay at the Valley with the 6 month old and rest of us will travel up to Pilatus. How much time does it take for a trp to and from Alpnachstad

    3. Regarding the PILU play area, is it en route to Pilatus via cogwheel train

thx in advance for your time.

Hi Pri, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

    >> 1. Is Pilatus altitude safe for children 4.years plus

Yes, if your child doesn’t have any health issues. If in doubt, consult your doctor.

For medical tips concerning high altitudes, there is some useful information on the Jungfrau site:

    http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/faq/#7048

    >> How much time does it take for a trp to and from Alpnachstad

You can use the Swiss Timetable to find out about travel times:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

Use the one on the right with the red SBB logo.

Most people go up one way and down the other, so make it clear to them when you buy your ticket that you want to come down the same way.

    >> 3. Regarding the PILU play area, is it en route to Pilatus via cogwheel train

No, it is at one of the stations on the cableway beteen Pilatus and Kriens (Krienseregg, the first station up from Kriens).
