Am I understanding it correctly on the SBB website that if I am purchasing a train ticket for a specific route on a specific day but not necessarily a specific time? So if I choose an itinerary that leave at 900, in theory I can take that same itinerary later in the day if we decide to delay departure an hour or two?

Yes, that is correct, but there are exceptions:

• Supersaver tickets are cheaper but only valid for a specific departure time: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/switzerland
• Some areas work with a “fare network” and do have time restricted tickets, e.g. unlimited traveling for 2 hours within that network, starting at the desired time you picked: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/howtotra vel. Single tickets for urban transport in Zurich work like that.
