    Hi

We will be visiting Interlaken on 8 Oct to 10 Oct and would like to do the Schynige Platte – First hike on the 9th Oct and have a few queries on our planning.

I understand we have to take a train from Interlaken Ost to Wilderswil (7.35am – 7.39am) and then take the cogwheel train to Schynige Platte (8.05am – 8.57am) and start the hike, which should take about 6hrs plus.

I am a little confused on how to we get back from First to Interlaken Ost. Do we take the First -> Grindelwald gondola then 15mins walk to Grindelwald station to take a train from Grindelwald to Interlaken Ost? Any idea how long it will takes?

We have the Swiss Travel Pass and is the below cost correct?

    Interlaken Ost -> Wilderswil: Free, Wilderswil -> Schynige Platte : CHF16 (50% off CHF32)

    First -> Grindelwald: CHF15 (50% off CHF30), Grindelwalk -> Interlaken Ost: Free

Separately, I saw on the brochure on http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/prices-and-brochures/ that there is a round trip Wilderswil – Schynige Platte and return from First – Wilderswil at a price of CHF71.80, but it wasn’t mentioned how is the journey like from First – Wilderswil. But this would have cost more than what I calculated above even with 50% off using Swiss Pass.

Would appreciate if anyone can provide any advice on this. Thank you.

Hi Leqi102 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

From First you can take the gondola to Grindelwald (around 25 mins) then you walk like 10 mins to get to the station in Grindelwald. From there to Interlaken it takes around 35 mins by train. You can check the timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

You can check the validity of the Swiss Travel Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity. Yes, that is correct, you travel on trains for free of charge, and to Schynige Platte and First you get 50% discount.

    Check these too:

Hope this helps, let me know if you have further questions.

CHF71.80 in the brochure is the round trip price from Wilderswil. You will get 50% off with STP. You only calculated the fares Wilderswil to Grindelwald earlier in your post.

As an alternative, there are hiking paths down to the valley – I have walked down from SP to Burglauenen before

    Hi leqi02-

<<“and start the hike, which should take about 6hrs plus.”>>

Here is some information on the hike:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/first-schynigeplatte

Most hikers prefer to go in the direction you have chosen.

There is a discussion of the hike in this thread:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/schilthorn-mannlichen-kleine-scheidegg-combo/page/3

Among many others, one of the posters (Mark) has frequently noted that some time spent around Schynige Platte on the Panoramaweg is worthwhile. There are some very nice views in all directions up there, and the view down to the lake is particularly nice. That might add a bit of time.

Searching for the terms Schynige Platte Panoramaweg will get you more posts on the subject.

    This is useful, too:

    http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/schynige-platte/

And, note that it is definitely a strenuous hike. If you are not accustomed to serious exercise at that altitude, you may find that the “thin” air ( low oxygen availability) will make your work harder and slow you down. Make sure you know the timing for the last cableway down from First. It is not very late in the day.

If you are experienced high altitude hikers and acclimated to the altitude, please forgive my cautionary comments. Many posters on the forum are not experienced in that kind of hiking.

Thank you all for the advice!

We have hiked a few high altitude mountain in France, and hopefully our body is still able to take the strenuous hike. I have read and will continue to read reviews and tips regarding the SP to First hike.

    So excited about it!

    Good to hear.

You may be interested in this map. originally developed for the Swiss Army, and maintained by the Federal Land Offfice:

And, although it offers no special information on that hike, for the national routes which are heavy lines on the map, clicking on the line leads you to extensive information about the trail:

    Hi All

May I know where do we buy the cogwheel train ticket for Wilderswil to Schynige Platte? Is it at the Wilderswil train station? Is there a specific counter to do that?

    Thank you.

You can buy any Swiss train ticket anywhere in Switzerland.

If there s some kind of special offer or special ticket, it may be easier to do it at any manned ticket counter, rather than from a ticket machine. Wilderswil station is tiny, so, if you wish to buy it there , you cannot go wrong. It will be obvious.

What about the one-way gondola ticket from First to Grindelwald? Where should we get the ticket for that?

Is there a ticketing counter at the First station? Because I have come across a few gondola/cable car ride where there is only ticketing counter at the ground station and not the summit station.

    Thanks!

    Hi Leqi102,

Sure, you’ll be able to get a ticket up at the mountain cable car station of First. It’s a rather large cableway and you’ll find manned desks at the top. Smaller cable cars may indeed have a ground station selling tickets only. In that case you can board at the top and pay for your journey after arrival at the valley station.
