My husband and I have been in Germany on on vacation the past week and are traveling tomorrow afternoon from Munich to Lucerne, with a change in Zurich. We plan to eat dinner ok the train but have never before eaten on a dining car so a few questions have done up…

    1. Do we take our suitcases/belongings with us when we go to the dining car or is it safe to leave them behind?

    2. How will we know which way to go to find the dining car?

    3. Does the dining car take credit cards or only cash? And if only cash, wouid we need Euros or francs?

    4. Is the dining car casual food or “fancy”? Are beer and wine available?

thanks for any help you may have!!

    Hi LHiskey,

Dining cars are great! I really like the changing scenery while having dinner or lunch. As for your questions:

    1. You can’t assume it’s safe to leave luggage unattended. But you can’t take it all to the dining car either, so at least take along all valuables.

    2. There should be a train layout at the platform in Munich. Sometimes there are directions in the train as well.

    3. If this is the direct Munich to Zurich train they take both currencies. Credit cards should work too.

    4. Usually there’s beer, wine, various other beverages and casual food.

    >> 2. How will we know which way to go to find the dining car?

The train layout diagram on the platform that Arno mentioned will look similar to this:

    http://www.bahnreiseberichte. de/052-Ostsee/52-005Wagenreihungsplan-Konstanz.JPG

It will show the composition of the train, and if you have a reserved seat, it will show you on what sector of the platform your carriage will be.

    >> 4. Is the dining car casual food or “fancy”? Are beer and wine available?

Here is the current menu (April and May 2017) for Deutsche Bahn onboard restaurants:

    db-bordgastronomie.de/dbg astro/downloads/DB_BR-Speisekarte_2017-04.pdf

All the dishes are described in English as well as German, and prices are in Euros and Swiss Francs.

Have a great trip and enjoy your dining-car experience!

Thank you so much! This was so helpful. We had a great time dining on the train–including wine! It was a lot of fun!
