We are heading to Switzerland end of week and the forecast on all apps shows lots of rain. We start in Zurich for a day and then head to Wengen for 3 days, then Zermatt for Two days, then lake Lucerne for two days, then home. Our accommodations have been booked for a while. We are quite worried that rain will derail our plans. All of our plans are outdoors, ie. Hiking, biking, etc. we are not heading to museums, and certainly not in the Bernese Oberland. What are thoughts? Do we postpone our trip? What do you do in Wengen and Zermatt when it is raining?

    Hi Peckvt,

Forecasts for a week and more ahead of time are not reliable, please see our FAQ’s and weather pages:

There’s often at least some rain in the forecasts. This could be as little as 0.5 mm per day or (a lot) more. It’s very much needed for the wonderful green pastures Switzerland is famous for 🙂 Anyway, the key is to be flexible and go outdoors during the best moments of the day. If there’s too much rain, then go and visit a city or enjoy a long lunch. Bad weather suggestions are on our town pages:

Thanks, but once we are in Wengen it does not look so easy to just ‘visit’ a city for the day., esp since our accommodations are in Wengen and Vermont. It rain typical the end of July / beginning of August ion these locations?

    Hi Peckvt,

Wengen is somewhat remote but you can easily take a train down to Lauterbrunnen and continue from there. Wengen to Bern is less than two hours by train.

Rain is common all year round, and certainly in summer as well. But the typical summer day is good weather until late afternoon and rain in the early evening and at night. No guarantees though. There could be no rain for weeks or all day long. That’s just how things are in the mountains.

Just dive right in. Have Plan A, B, C, D, and possibly E. Our trip was from June 3-13 and the weather was not ideal the majority of the time, but we persevered. We tried to go to Glacier 3000 on three different days, but the last day was successful and it was soooooo worth it. Buy thin rain jackets or ponchos for everyone and just walk in the rain. We looked at Stabauch Falls in the sprinkling rain and also Trummelbach Falls. Didn’t really matter. Still beautiful in its own right. We also rode the Wengen Mannlichen Cable Car (on TOP of the car) and it was completely socked in on the ride up. It was fun riding in the “clouds”. By the time we came down it cleared and was beautiful. Same for Mt. Pilatus. We rode up with lots of cloud cover, but every few minutes they would completely clear out and we could take pictures. Just try not to be bummed out if things are socked in. The town of Wengen has lots of nice shops to look at and Zermatt is loaded with shops and beautiful architecture. You are in Switzerland for goodness sakes, ha, it will be a great trip!!!

    Not Vermont i’m guessing 🙂

Ignore the forecast until the day or night before, then plan.

Remember Switzerland is a small country – you can easily get from Wengen to larger lowland towns such as Thun, Bern, Luzern for a day trip.
