We are arriving in Lucerne August 21st late afternoon. Would like to take a boat/rail trip yet have concert tickets Aug 22 at 19:30 in Lucerne. Which trip gives a better exposure to Switzerland and should we try to accomplish this on the 22nd or wait until the 23rd. Must be back in Zurich mid day the 24th. Thank you.

Depending on how late in the afternoon you arrive you could travel to either mountain (or at least just do the boat trip on Lake Lucerne: https://www.myswissalp s.com/boatlakelucerne
Use the Swiss railways timetable (https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable) to plan the trips from Lucerne to either mountain to see how much time you need. you can easily do either mountain on the morning of the 22nd though.
Picking between them is harder. If you want to experience one of the world’s steepest cogwheel trains then go to Pilatus: https://www.myswissalp s.com/pilatus
If you’d like more activities and hikes once you are at the top, Rigi might be the better option: https://www.myswissalp s.com/rigi
