    Hi,

My family and I will be leaving Zermatt (first week of April) to head to Italy. I read that you need reservations on Italian trains so upon looking at reservations, I started having trouble getting reservations from Zermatt to Brig due to that being the Glacier Express route. It said to make reservations directly from Glacier Express site for Zermatt to Brig but the reservation is coming out over 100 Swiss Franks just for that small distance. Do any of you know if I even need reservations for that part of the trip? If I go ahead and make reservations from Brig to Milan and we miss it because we cant get on the Glacier Express what happens? Can you get on another train? What is the best site to make reservations outside of Switzerland. Sorry it gets so complicated sometimes.

    Thanks so much.

    Hi LOswald,

Have you read http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy. I know it’s the reverse of what you are doing but the information remains the same.

There are regular (non-Glacier Express) trains on the Zermatt to Brig route. Just time your trip to take one of them. No reservations required.

Use the SBB Timetable (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) to plan your travel. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. The GEX departures ared denoted “PE” for Panoramic Express.

    Glacier Express:

Take care with the hyperbolic marketing of the Glacier Express. In practice the Glacier Express is just an occasional ‘exclusive’ train on a normal railway route with plenty of other normal – non supplement , reservation-free trains on it.

It is not complicated. Get any of the regular ordinary trains Zermatt – Brig

    http://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/ fileadmin/fap_pdf_fiel ds/2019/140.pdf

Depart at xx.13 past each hour for a direct train, depart at xx.37 pats each hour for a train which requires a change at Visp.

From Brig you will need a reservation on the international train through the Simplon tunnel to Italy.

    Hi Oswald,

Indeed you do not need to take the Glacier Express for that route http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress

And you don’t need reservations in Switzerland. For the Swiss trains, you have a link from Rockoyster and be sure to plan your travel using http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

Here is a link to Zermatt too for more info: http://www.myswissalps.com/ze rmatt

All the best on your trip!

    Maria.
