I will be staying in Zurich for a few days at the end of May.

Your website recommends a rail day trip from Zurich to Chur and then the Glacier Express to Andermatt and then return to Zurich.

This appears to be quite expensive, especially travelling first class and I was wondering if any of the Travel Passes may be beneficial in reducing the cost.

Hi Mackinder and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Full-fare train travel in Switzerland is expensive.

You could look at the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/on edaytravelpass/details) but not the need to buy in advance. If you travel on the actual Glacier Express (as opposed to regular trains on the same route) you also need to pay for seat reservations.

As an alternative, very scenic (apart from the 57Km in the Gotthard Base Tunnel), day trip out of Zurich you might want to also have a look this offer http://www.rhb.ch/en/tickets-travelcards/promotions /gotthard-bernina-circular-tour#c26401

    Hi Mackinder,

Yes, high prices are hard to avoid here. If you aren’t planning to much travel on public transit while in Switzerland and a rail pass like a 3 or 4 day Swiss Travel Pass doesn’t make sense then Rockoyster’s suggestion of a Saver Day Pass may work out the best.

Traveling 2nd class will also reduce costs and is quite comparable to 1st class usually. Read about 1st class vs 2nd class here. That combined with regional trains (on the Glacier Express route) would be the cheapest option.

Sometimes you can find SuperSaver tickets at a nice discount but you must travel at the departure time you buy it for – normal tickets are valid for any train that day.
