Hi Sharonlhall and welcome to MySwissAlps!
That is a tricky route between those two areas – even if you did go via Milan.
You could ferry across to Menaggio and then bus to Lugano.
From Lugano either go up to Luzern and down to Montreux or go via Locarno and Domodossola to Brig. However there was a landslide between Locarno and Domodossola so there is a bus replacement service currently operating…but it is still scenic.
The Swiss railways timetable can help you play around with possible routes: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable & Google Maps helps as well.

Train to Tirano then to Chur then Glacier Express route to Brig then on to Montreux. Long day in the saddle but avoids Milan big time.

Hello Sharon,
If you make your way to Como town you can take the train across to Lugano. This is a twenty minute ride and will allow you to head North to Lucerne or West to the Montreux region. Because you are time limited I would forego Montreux entirely and regional train it from Lugano to Fluelen and then take the ferry from Fluelen to Lucerne. This is a very scenic journey and is far less hassle than navigating across to Montreux. Lucerne gives you many opportunities and is close to Zurich airport.
