Luzern is a long way to go for a boat ride when Brienz and Thun are so close at hand.

The timetable will show you the duration of the trips and you can best decide if it can work for your group. http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable
I’d agree with Rockoyster that there are closer lakes with also nice views to enjoy if you find Lake Lucerne too far for you.

The timetable is very confusing . I punched in Lauterbrunnen – Schilthorn at 08.00 hours . the result shown takes me via Interlaken Oost and the duration is 20 + hours . Am I doing something wrong ?

Yes. 🙂
I punched in that route for tomorrow (for example) at 08:00 and it gave me 54 minutes by bus and then cable car (the route via Stechelberg). Departing at 08:05 and then every 30 minutes.
Make sure the spelling is correct – perhaps it gave you a different town?

Thanks Lucas I did indeed have a spelling issue. Would I be correct in thinking parking a car at the rail station is likely to be both difficult and expensive ? Hence good idea to leave car at hotel and opt for the longer train trip ?

I agree with the others that doing both attractions in the one day is over ambitious – although not impossible. It would be more like an endurance test than a pleasant experience.
In June 2015, my partner and I spent several enjoyable days based at Unterseen (near Interlaken) and using the Berner Oberland Pass.
We included the Schilthorn trip and had a lovely day. The weather was magnificent. Compare that to my “effort” in June 1989 when we didn’t get any further than Murren due to bad weather.
On different days we took boat trips on both lakes, Brienz and Thun. Easily combined with scenic bus and cableway trips using the Berner Oberland Pass.
My though is that it’s better to spend more time in fewer “areas” but we are all different. This is a wonderful site and you’ll find the resources you need or links thereto.
Enjoy your planning – and your travels.

Hi Pomkitanner,
Yes, I’d leave the car at the hotel. There’s not much you can do with a car in the Lauterbrunnen valley. You can only drive as far as Stechelberg. But if you park there you’re forced to take the same route up and down to Mürren and the Schilthorn: http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn/gettingthere. Plus you would pay for parking.
