We are a group of eight adults and two children. We are using the 15 day Travel Pass. On June 21 (mid-afternoon), we need to take the train from Geneva Airport to Wengen. On June 28, we will take the train from Wengen to Chateau d’Oex. On July 2 (early morning), we will take the train from Chateau d’Oex to the Geneva Airport for our departing flight. In between, we will take shorter train rides, such as to Montreux and Gruyeres.

Should we make seat reservations, or not? I have seen conflicting answers to the question whether there is an additional charge to make seat reservations, and whether seat reservations are required on scenic trains such as the Golden Pass. All things being equal, we would like to take the Golden Pass, but if it costs a lot more because we are required to make seat reservations and there is an additional seat reservation charge on top of our Travel Pass, then we would be happy to take the non-scenic trains. Thank you.

    Hi Variation15,

Seat reservations always need to be paid for separately. They are only required for a few scenic trains though, and all routes also offer regular trains with the same views. You’ll find all details on our reservation page and the various scenic train pages (check the Tickets tab):

    Enjoy the trips!

Assume we all have the Swiss Travel Pass. If a scenic train is the first one to come along when we want to go somewhere, and we do not have reservations for that scenic train, can we board the scenic train and ride to our destination? Or must we wait for a non-scenic train? Thank you.

    Hi Variation15,

Reservations must be made for the Glacier Express, Bernina Express and the Gotthard Panorama Express. If the train isn’t full you can make the reservation at the station, or check with a conductor/train employee, before boarding.

Thank you, Lucas. You did not mention the Golden Pass scenic train. Are the rules different for that train?

    Hi Variation15,

The first link Annika gave you provides all details of the various trains. Pick a train there, then click to the Tickets tab for an explanation about seat reservations and tickets. Feel free to let us know if there’s anything you can’t find there.

    Enjoy the trips!
