My wife and I will be in the Luzern area in a few weeks, for three days, and on one of the days we plan to go on a boat ride plus ride up to Rigi Kulm, (we will have the Swiss Travel Pass). I know often people take the boat to Weggis or Vitznau, but is there an alternate approach to see a bit more of the lake and still fit in Rigi Kulm.

In terms of the lake in general is there a certain stop off point where one has gotten a good feel of the lake but without going all the way to Fluelen? Perhaps Brunnen?

The official name of Lake Luzern is Vierwaldstättersee (Lake of the four forest cantons). However, geographically it is divided into several parts. The part south of Brunnen is the Urnersee, which is in fact one of the best parts, and features historic landmarks like the ‘birthplace of Switzerland. Personally I don’t think there is anything better than doing the whole lake as far as Fluelen. However going as far as Brunnen does mean you see all the lake even though you don’t sail it all. The disadvantage of Brunnen is that the railway station is not at the lakeside as it is at Fluelen.

However Luzern – Brunnen – Arth Goldau – Rigi Kulm – Vitznau – Luzern (or Rigi – Weggis – Luzern) or vice versa is a feasible circuit

    Hi rob travels,

just a quick extension to 1960man’s great answer: you can read more about the boat trips on Lake Lucerne here: http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakelucerne.

If you want, you can take an organized lake cruise as well, but that won’t be included in your Swiss Travel Pass, as it is a different company: http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakelucerne/packages.
