Hi hoho66! I agree with Rockoyster that the Golden Pass route is a great option. You’d travel as far as Spiez, and change trains towards Thun/Bern there. You’ll find details in the timetable at myswissalps.com/timeta ble. Enter “Zweisimmen” as a via-station to see connections on this route. Otherwise, the timetable will mostly present the faster route via Lausanne.

An alternative is the Lötschberg route, which takes you across the Alps between the southern and the northern part of the country. You’d travel via Visp and then get on the regional Lötschberger train towards Spiez and Bern, via Goppenstein and Kandersteg. There are fast tunnel connections between Visp and Spiez as well, but those are obviously less scenic.

Thanks Rockoyster and Annika for your suggestions , actually my journey start at Zurich and will stay in Switzerland for 16 days, would you please comments for my planning and worry.

    1. I Will buy a 15 days Swiss Travel Pass after arrival, or do I need to buy in advance ?

    2. Arrive at Zurich on July 24 at 08:30 and will go straight to Lucern for 4 nights (take train )

    3. Lucern to Interlaken and stay at Wengen for 3 nights ( Golden Pass route)

    4. Wengen to Zermatt and stay for 4 nights (Interlaken to Spiez change for the regional service to Brig via Kandersteg then Brig to Zermatt)

    5. Zermatt to Montreux and stay for 2 nights ( Train from Zermatt via Visp then Montreux)

    6. Montreux to Bern and stay only 1 night ( as u suggest, taking golden pass route)

    7. Bern to Zurich (this is my 16 days of travel and not able to use the STP, so I need to buy single ticket from Bern to Zurich)

    8. For the golden pass route , do I need to book in advance and do I need to reserve seats ?

    9. Do I have any chance to take the Bernina Express or the Glacier Express ? cos everybody name this two express are very beautiful.

    Thank you so much.

    Sounds like a good plan.

For the golden pass route , do I need to book in advance and do I need to reserve seats ?

You can make reservations for the Golden Pass Line (http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass) including seat selection at bit.ly/2kaq6Rf. Click the “e” for English language top right of the page. (where it says “Sprachwahl: d i f e”). Then change the class of travel, date of travel and start/end points to suit. Reservations are not compulsory but are recommended on the Zweisimmen to Montreux leg (which is where the Panoramic trains operate) during peak tourist season.

Do I have any chance to take the Bernina Express or the Glacier Express ?

No but don’t lose any sleep over it. You will see many beautiful sights and you have to save something for next time. 😉

Thanks so much for your advise, and how about the swiss travel pass, do I need to buy in advance ?

As I seen in one of the post by the moderator that mentioned group discount, should I do that ?

You should buy your Swiss Travel Pass on-line in advance of your visit. Then you can use it as soon as you arrive with no queuing to buy at the airport. Print at home plus you can also show the PDF on your phone but always carry a paper copy as well.

Do you have 10 adults in your group? If not then the group promotion does not apply. Other promotions at http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/promotio ns.

Great thanks for your information. I just checked for the seat reservation from Montreux to Luzern (Golden Pass route) , and come up a few questions.

I will buy the 2nd class STP, but would like to take first class on this route (Golden pass route), I have read some related post that said

” if you buy a 2nd class pass you can upgrade for any journey you like. Cost is 50% of the difference between the fares and you need to do this before getting on the train – go to any station, tell them which sector you want to upgrade and then pay the difference.”

    1. if I willing to upgrade on this route from 2nd class to 1st class, is that mean I can make the reservation through (bit.ly/2kaq6Rf ) for the seat at the 1st class train ?

    2. for the upgrade , can I do that through the SBB app, pay the Point to Point Class Upgrade

As indicated on the SBB mobile app

Montreux to Zweisimmen ( Point to Point Class Upgrade CHF25 )

Zweisimmen to Interlaken (Point to Point Class Upgrade CHF 21)

Interlaken to Luzern (Point to Point Class Upgrade CHF 25)

I just want to make sure to get the seats (for 2) and on 1st class train, cos I found the seats are quite full nowThanks again for your professional.

    1. Yes

    2. If you are travelling with a 2nd Class Swiss Travel Pass but want to travel 1st Class on any particular trip you can buy a Class upgrade at any SBB station or using the SBB Mobile App or here bit.ly/2rZEIXh. You need to buy a route specific upgrade.

If you buy on line you need to nominate a Half-fare Card reduction to get the correct price. An upgrade will cost half the difference between 1st and 2nd class full-fares.

If you want to go from Montreux to Bern first Class then you just need one upgrade. You can upgrade Montreux to Zweisimmen or Montreux to Spiez or Montreux to Bern.

    1. Can I reserve the 1st class seat now and do the upgrade at the SBB station after arrival ?

    Hello HoHo,

There are three sorts of train running on that line:

    • The MOB Panoramic departures coloured yellow-ish on the attached timetable extract.
    • The MOB Belle Epoque departing Montreux 8.44 hours and 13.44 hours and coloured purple on the attached.
    • Regular regional trains

They all have 1st or 2nd Class carriages.

    Hello HoHo,

    1. That’s a purely personal choice. Some people like the modern panoramic trains others prefer the feel of the classic style, other are perfectly happyt just to go on a regular train.

    2. Luggage should not be a problem.
