Hello, and thank You all for such a wonderful resource.
Our group of 2 couples will be disembarking from a river boat in Basel on October 14th. and before returning to Canada we are planning to add a few days to see the Alps and some of Switzerland by train.
We have heard about the Glacier Xpress and are thinking of heading to Zermatt, maybe for 2 nights so that we can explore and take the cable car or ?? if the weather permits, and then take the GEX to St Moritz.
Time may require that we head to Zurich the next day, maybe explore there for a day, before off to the airport, but If we opted for a 2nd night in St. Moritz is there another trip/attraction that we should consider?
Will using the rail pass just for a discount one day count as a “day”, if we had the flex pass?
Still very much in the planning stage, so no rush, but your thoughts and comments will be very much appreciated; we are not so young and do not need to be rushing too much…
    Many thanks
    Trevor T.

Hi TrevorT and welcome to MySwissAlps!

That sounds like a good plan for a couple days in Switzerland. The train to Zermatt from Montreux is about 3.5 hours – you can check train schedules here.

Have a look at our Zermatt page to look into what you can do there.

The Glacier Express is a great scenic train option for you – it departs Zermatt in the morning around 8am and arrives around 4pm to St.Moritz.

St. Moritz is pretty but small and an extra night may or may not be worth it to you. Zurich is the largest city and while it isn’t in the mountains there is a nice lake and lots of museums, art galleries etc to see.

Using either the Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Travel Pass Flex for any train ride (free or discounted) will count as a day yes.

I hope that helps get you started!

    Lucas
