Hi Ginger 62, and welcome to MySwissAlps!
Sion is the capital of the Alpine canton Valais. Known for the two castles, each one on a hill, on top of the old town. Nice old town, pedestrian zone, good restaurants. Great local wines. Sion is also a good starting point for the side valleys.
About 1 hr by train from Montreux (for details find the timetable, starting at “How to Travel” on top of your screen).
To give you more hints we’d need to know when you plan your visit (there are great opportunities throughout the year, but they are very different from season to season), how much time you would have available in and around Sion, and what your main interests (outdoor, museums, night life, architecture, local life, business, alpine economy,…).

You should enjoy the trip!
Completely agree with Snowman – a nice place to visit – and something a bit different from the usual discussions on this site!
On the journey look out for the curiosity that is the 90 degree turn in the Rhone Valley – a geological oddity
Danke schon
You will be saying Merci not Danke in Montreux and Sion (and in fact in most of Switzerland as the French ‘Merci’ is used in Swiss-German speach as well
👍 Merci beaucoup😀
I will be at Sion on 26 July n stayin a nite at the Youth hostel
