HI, I’ll be visiting switzerland with my family in early august. We plan on visiting, Schilthorn, Mt Pilatus or Titlis, Gornergrat, Glacier Paradise, Grindelwald first, Mt Rigi and Stanserhorn and possibly Jungfrau also if time permits.

1)Which of these mountains will have snow in August? Somewhere around 5th to 15th August. We dont plan on doing any snow activities, we just want to see the views of snow capped mountains. Will the trees be green or will the leaves have turned yellow/brown due to the summer heat?

    2) we plan on covering Lauterbrunnen, Murren and Gimmelwald. since these villages are on the way to Schilthorn, can we club both the mountain top and these villages on the same day trip?

3)We also may have an extra day in zermatt for local sightseeing. We could opt to take the Glacier express instead. Is it worth it? will we get to travel through snow mountains? we will be taking the golden pass train so there is a scenic train on the trip already. Not sure whether to add the Glacier express or not.

    Thanks!

Snow capped mountains are visible in August from all the places you mention (although getting less every year with global warming…) but August is not really the time of year to visit if you want to travel ‘through snow capped mountains’.

There is no need to travel on the Glacier Express ‘just because it exists’. You trip already includes lots of mountains and the Glacier Express trip will not add a great deal to your trip, except for the bridges, ravines, tunnels, spirals etc on certain parts of the route.

    Hi Dishayagriv,

    1. There is snow all year round on Titlis and Gornergrat. These destinations are on your list so you’ll definitely be seeing some snow during your trip. Jungfraujoch has snow all year round too.

    2. Yes, it’s possible to combine a trip to Schilthorn with a quick visit to the neighbouring villages of Mürren, Gimmelwald and Lauterbrunnen. You can find useful information on how to plan a round trip here: http://www.myswissalps.com/schilthorn/gettingthere

    3. The Glacier Express in summer is not the best time to experience snowcapped mountains but the trip is certainly recommended if you enjoy panoramic train rides. The route is explained in detail here: http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/gettingthere.

    Regards,

    Thank you!

If possible can you post a few images of what the general landscape looks like in August? I’d like to know how lush and green it is before planning the trip. Because if there’s very less snow then we’d prefer if its green atleast with beautiful scenery😊

    Thanks!

What is the weather going to be like? Should we pack jackets and raincoats??

    Hi Dishayagriv,

August is usually the warmest month of the year. In the mountains however, it can still get chilly and windy so bring something warm. A light jacket and pullover should be sufficient. Wear layers for your mountain excursions so you can quickly adapt to the changing weather. a quick description about the seasonal weather is described here: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit

By the way, you can look at the mountain webcams to see the current conditions at the summit and surrounding areas.

    Hope this helps.

    regards,

    Anna

Here is a picture I took of the Glacier Express above Andermatt in August. There are a few patches of snow on the mountains. Every piece of land in view in the picture is covered in snow in winter

It can snow in August. We stayed in a holiday chalet on the top section of the Luzern – Interlaken railway in August 2010. Here are two of my pictures – green one day – snow on the higher slopes the next morning

Thanks for your pictures 1960man! It’s sad to see less snow in summer due to climate change. To me, that makes fresh summer snow as in your 2nd picture even the more special and enjoyable.
