Hello, my husband and I want to snowshoe on Christmas day. Will there a place open so we can rent snowshoes close to a place to snowshoe? Should we go to a resort? Can we rent them at a ski resort? We are older, but very active. Are there places by Jungfraujoch? Will there be cafes open or places we can buy food to eat? We are just looking for a fun active Christmas day.

    Thank you,

    Linda

Hello oldgranny and welcome to MySwissAlps!

It’s yes to all your questions. Resorts near Jungfraujoch are Kleine Scheidegg, Wengen, Grindelwald, and Mürren.

Hello Linda! Great that you get to spend Christmas in the splendid Jungfrau region. Many tourists and Swiss residents will get out on Christmas day, so you’ll certainly be able to enjoy several activities and find open cafes and restaurants. Hi Linda

For a list of hiking and snowshoeing trails maintained in the winter (December through end of March) go to Jungfrau.ch and click under activities then choose winter hiking. There you will see a list and description of trails for snowshoeing as well as hiking. Mark

Do you actually want to ‘snowshoe’ or just walk in the Alps in the snow.

If it is actually the latter then all you need is regular hiking gear as Switzerland has a network of ‘Winterwanderweg’ – winter walking paths that in the snowy higher altitude regions replace the famous yellow signposted normal walking paths (the Winter paths are colour coded mauve).

We would like to do both. We do a lot of hiking here in California, but haven’t hiked in the snow. I would like obvious marked paths. I dont want to get lost. We are so excited. I’ll be asking more questions because we will be staying for a while. Thank you,
    Linda

If I were you I’d try cross country ski-ing rather than snow shoe – I think it’s more fun
