I see there are various lines that do this run; I was wondering if my 15 day Swiss Travel Pass covers all of them

    Hi Alicia,

On the assumption you got to St Moritz via the Glacier Express have a look at going to the airport via Zernez for a different scenic route.

We are just trying to get there as fast as possible we will have already spent three days in Zermatt and also yes from Zermatt will take Glacier Express.

This is the end of a long journey for some pretty old folks…. And a long journey home to the West Coast of the U.S.

So you can go via Chur or via Zernez and Landquart.. There is little difference in time but the latter doesn’t duplicate the GEX route.

Permit me to explain what Rockoyster is talking about:

Until 20, there was one railway line from the rest of Switzerland to St Moritz – the Albula railway of the Graubünden Canton’s ‘national railway’ the Rhätische Bahn (RhB) . The (now UNESCO listed) Albula railway is the line that the GEX takes from Chur to St Moritz, and is still the ‘official’ express route Chur – St Moritz. To reach the Albula, inter city SBB main line trains from Zurich run to Chur via Sargans and Landquart. Landquart is the junction for the RhB’s Klosters and Davos lines.

In 1999, the Vereina tunnel was opened with the express purpose of providing a route under the mountains for passenger trains and car carrying trains. The tunnel allows motor vehicles to be carried quickly and frequently into the Engadine region from Klosters giving all year round motor access to the Engadine from the rest of Switzerland.

A few years ago the RhB introduced a few experimental direct trains Landquart – St Moritz via the Vereina tunnel. This is the route rockoyster refers to. Because Landquart is closer to Zurich than is Chur, the overall journey time St Moritz – Zurich is no different and as he says it will give you a completely different scenic route to end your trip. I can vouch for the scenery as I was in the area 2 weeks ago.
