During our 15 day rail trip thru Switzerland in January 2020 we plan 4 nights in Zermatt but looking at accommodation costs it seems much cheaper to stay in Tasch and travel when needed to Zermatt rather than stay in Zermatt itself??? any comments please

Entirely up to you.

Personally I like the buzz of Zermatt and there is something special about being in the town overnight (lovely walks around the main street and quite backwaters etc)

It is really up to you. I would suggest to stay in Zermatt if you can find an accomodation that fits your budget. There are also some hostels in Zermatt:
