    Hi everyone!

Myself and a few friends from Zurich went on a quick day trip to Stein am Rhein this weekend. My friends have a car so we made the 45/50 minute drive around 1pm on a sunny Sunday afternoon, leaving around 6pm for the drive back to Zurich.

This amount of time allowed us to wander the town, poke into shops and stop for coffee and cake (or beer) along the waterfront. We also made a quick trip up to Hohenklingen Castle (5 minute car ride otherwise a 30/45 minute hike up the hill (I’m guessing). There was a nice looking restaurant there which had great views of the town and you might spend 45 to 60 minutes exploring the castle (it isn’t too big).

There were also boat cruises running when we were there (April 23).

If you take a train (which my wife and I would do normally as we don’t own a car) you can get there in about 1 hour from Zurich main train station – schedules here. It is a very small town and is easy to explore on foot in one afternoon.

Also we were pleasantly surprised at food and drink prices – due we’re guessing to their desire to attract nearby Germans for the afternoon.

I’ve attached a few pictures of the town so you can get an idea of what it looks like.

    Cheers,
    Lucas

    Hi Lucas,

Thanks a lot for your trip report and great pictures! You have an eye for photography! Stein am Rhein looks wonderful and definitely worth a visit. It already was on my to do list, and now even more so. Glad you had such brilliant weather. The last couple of days it’s been rather rainy and chilly, right? Good for you that you picked the right day for your trip :-).

    Thanks Annika!

Ha, yes it snowed here this morning and last week but last weekend was around 16 degrees. The weather has been crazy in the Zurich area!

    Hi Lucas

Thanks for your report and pictures – lovely.

A couple of years ago we did a river cruise from Kreuzlingen to Schaffhausen and had a good view of Stein am Rhein from the boat. I thought it looked lovely then and thought we might pay a visit one day. I shall check timetable for details on how to get there by train. Pity it is such a climb up to the castle but I might send hubby up there while I relax by the river – wouldn’t be the first time we have done that sort of thing – I don’t do ascent very well! Unlike most people I find my knees don’t object to descent for some reason – I just have difficulties getting up to places to descend from! When the boat docked there were loads of people disembarking with bicycles so I guess they were planning to ride along the river path!

    Cheers

Amazing photos Lucas! My family and I were there 2 weeks ago and Stein am Rhine was simply stunning!! We took the train and bus from Zurich Airport and even the views from the ride was also beautiful. We had lunch at the Imbiss und Take Away zum Tiergarten and the owner of the restaurant was lovely to talk to, very funny and entertaining! I would like to go back to Stein Am Rhein if I am ever at Switzerland again.

    Hi LuthienBabe,

I saw the take-away “Zum Tiergarten” and we should have looked at what it was all about and where that name came from. haha We didn’t see any Zoos there!

Really lovely photos. That elevated view is fantastic, as are those quaint buildings shots.

I have finally booked my trip for September and considered Stein am Rhein as a Zurich daytrip. But then my list of potential daytrips just grew, spoilt for choice!

    Hi,

Is it possible to do Rhine fall- Schaffausen- Stein am rhein in a day? My base is at Zurich. Maybe spend about 2 hrs at Stein am Rhein?

Yes, you could do all three. It is all about how much travel you want to spend at each attraction/town.

Use the Swiss railways timetable to plan out the trips. Schaffhausen is right near the RheinFall and Stein am Rhein is only 30 minutes or so away.

In your opinion, which town is more unique to visit? Schaffeusen Or Stein am Rhein? Maybe I should just prioritize one and visit the last one only if time allow.

    Hi Meeraoz-

The thing we mopst remebr from our visit there is a lunch at the castle up on the hill.

It is noted throughout the thread.

it is quite a climb, but we found it worthwhile.

Yes, quite the climb up but the views were great (see my pics from there) and in good weather the restaurant is a great idea (check that they are open before going).
