Hello there! We are taking the Train fr Zermatt to Gornegrat. Can we alight at Riffelberg , take a hike to Riffelsee , and ride the train all the way up to Gornegrat? or can we take the train fr Gornegrat to Riffelberg , hike to Riffelsee , and catch the train back to Zermatt? We have an STP . I just don’t know if we need to pay extra if we alight at Riffelberg and take the train again to or from Gornegrat. Hiking fr Gornegrat will take 1 hr 21 mins and it might not be feasible for our schedule. Thanks!

As long as you don’t repeat a journey in the same direction twice, your ticket will be valid . Your best bet will be to go all the way to Gornergrat, enjoy that for some time, then walk down to Riffelsee. After the lake, take the short walk to Rotenboden station and return down to Zermatt

    Hi Samlam,

yes, you can hop on and hop off, just make sure it is in the same direction – just as 1960man wrote. We did the same route as he advised, it was wonderful.

Here is how you can get to Rotenboden, and how to walk to Riffelalp (or vice versa): http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/rotenboden-riffelalp/route

You can learn more about Gornergrat and Zermatt here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gornergrat and http://www.myswissalps.com/zermatt.

    Happy hiking!

    Hi Samlam

For no additional charge you can also hop off at Riffelalp and take the 5 min walk to the Riffelalp hotel. In my opinion the view of the Matterhorn is even better than from Riffelsee or Gornergrat as it is closer and unobstructed. You can also have a drink or lunch on the front lawn restaurant with a beautiful view down to Zermatt and the surrounding mountains including the Matterhorn. My thumbnail photo was taken from the hotel.
