Hi folks
Just wondering do you buy tickets in advance for the Sunnegga Funicular before you go or can you purchase on the day. Is there a ticket booth there. Price also please.
Thanks in advance.
Karen.

Hi Karen,
You can buy tickets on the spot from the ticket booth or online: http://www.myswissalps.com/sunneggarothorn/tickets.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts16 January 2019 at 21:59:18 #902236Thanks Arno
Are the tickets the same price buying on the spot as buying online?
ArnoModerator15482 posts16 January 2019 at 22:41:22 #902237It depends on where you buy (and currency, exchange rate), but it shouldn’t be much of a difference, if any.

Travelling there in May would it be better to buy before I leave to avoid queues?
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts16 January 2019 at 23:47:20 #902239I’m pretty sure if you buy from Viator you will just get a voucher which you need to exchange for a real ticket (at the ticket booth) anyway.
May is far from peak tourist season. I would just buy on the day. Pays to wait to see what the weather is like before. Not going to be much fun up at Sunnegga if it is cloud/rain/snow.

By the way the Sunnegga funicular (just referring to the train ride itself) is about the most boring train in the whole of Switzerland…
Removed userParticipant72625 posts17 January 2019 at 3:48:11 #902241Thanks rockoyster, would there still be snow in May??
Removed userParticipant72625 posts17 January 2019 at 3:51:05 #902242Really a boring train ride!! Isn’t that where you walk to the Lake Liesee?
Any suggestions for other sightseeing eg: Swiss Glacier and the Ice Palace? Is this worth the money?
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts17 January 2019 at 6:02:34 #902243Snow in May? Falling or on the ground? Falls unlikely, on the ground likely not in Zermatt itself but certainly higher up there will be. 1960man was just referring to the funicular ride itself, on account, I presume, of it being in a tunnel with nothing to see. Boring is a very relative term. 😎
ArnoModerator15482 posts17 January 2019 at 6:08:54 #902244Well, the ride is only a few minutes and in a tunnel. The goal of the trip is to enjoy the views: not from the train but from Sunnegga. Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn are (more expensive) alternatives. You can compare your options here:
pkerrParticipant265 posts17 January 2019 at 18:13:37 #902245I think I’ve seen this on google maps. Is the ride really short? And there are stps next to it so you can walk up the tunnel? Or maybe I’m thinking of something completely different.
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts17 January 2019 at 19:25:05 #902246It’s only a 3 minute ride. Not enough time to get bored. Maybe you are thinking of the steps to board the cabins. See http://www.funimag.com/suisse /sunnegga01.htm
pkerrParticipant265 posts17 January 2019 at 19:31:21 #902247Yep… that’s the one. I thought there were steps that went all the way up.
Thanks
Removed userParticipant72625 posts18 January 2019 at 0:50:18 #902248I specifically added ‘the train ride itself’ to clarify that’s what I was talking about. It’s boring because it’s a tin train in an underground tube. Of the three main ways to gain altitude in Zermatt it is only one with no views from the actual ride
ArnoModerator15482 posts18 January 2019 at 9:31:26 #902249Don’t let the lack of a view hold you back 🙂 Walking up will take a lot more than 3 minutes and can’t be done in that tunnel. Once up, the view is great, if the weather is great.
