Hello. My family of five will be in Switzerland the first week of June. We will be based at Em Simmental and will be traveling by car and or rail from Zermatt to Zurich during our time there. Is there a good place somewhere between there to go swimming outdoors? Thanks!

    Hello macduncan05,

On the leg from the Simmental towards Zermatt you could choose a route via Montreux, where there are some beautiful public baths on the Lake of Geneva.

Also on the route Berne area – Zürich you can choose to travel via Lucerne and have a swim in the Lake Lucerne.

To figure out if you better travel by car or train, use the two below links. The first one allows you to calculate travelling times by train, the second by car:

Thank you kindly for your response. We will already have a car as well be exploring two other countries before arriving in Switzerland. We’re taking the rail to Zermatt from Speiz and don’t plan on going to Montreux. We are going to Lucerne for a day so we can look there. Are there any other good swimming places?

First week of June is (too?) early for outdoor swimming if you were thinking of lake swimming, but there are many open air swimming pools around Switzerland. Most notably – in Spiez!

Spiez has a combined lake swimming place and lido – I used it last summer

I’m not sure I understand your itinerary though – you comments so far confuse me (for example what is “Em Simmental”? (I know what the ‘Simmental’ is (ie the valley between Spiez and Zweisimmen)

By the way, it may be cheaper/easier to leave you car at a station anywhere on the Simmental valley railway rather than Spiez

There were people swimming in Lake Lucerne in the first week in June when I was there in 2017. Daytime temperatures were nudging 30C every day for a week. 😎

Thanks! We will be based in Erlenbach I’m Simmental. From there we’re spending a day in Zermatt, day in Lucerne area, day in Grindelwald, and a day in Zurich. I will definitely look at the swimming in Spiez. And we’ll look too at leaving the car in Erlenbach.
