Hello, I am planning my trip to Switzerland for September 2020. I will have three days and will be staying in Lauterbrunnen. I will be arriving via train from Paris. Weather permitting I would like to do the Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch and some hiking in the Murren area. I have been comparing the different passes (Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, Berner Oberland Regional Pass and the Jungfrau Travel Pass) using the excel calculation sheet and the SBB Mobile app to get prices for individual train routes. From the calculations it looks like the Swiss Half Fare Card is the best option. I was wondering if anyone else was planning something similar and came up with the same calculations as I did. Thank you.

    Hello Theresaj3362,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps!

How wonderful that you will be coming to Switzerland in the fall. Here is a useful link for your reference when you are arriving inbound to Switzerland from Paris:

I have also attached links to the following places for you to read in detail:

    Schilthorn: http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn

    Jungfrau: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion

    Murren: http://www.myswissalps.com/mu rren

Thanks for using the excel calculation sheet to do a cost comparison for your Switzerland trip in September 2020! Other readers can find it at http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass. It’s probably hard to find someone who did comparable calculations, as each itinerary contains very specific details that determine the outcome. You can browse other rail pass threads in the Rail forum though (http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/rail), and see if you come across anything that clears your doubts. You can also attach your calculations here. Although moderators and members won’t be able to re-calculate all your work and check all details, they can have a quick look and see if you’re on the right track.

If the math tells you the Swiss Half-fare Card is best for your plans then it most likely is.

You don’t say where you are arriving/departing Switzerland so there will be transport involved in getting from there to Lauterbrunnen and back. Look at the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass and bit.ly/2rkekat) as an adjunct for your SHFC for those trips.

Do yourself a favour and get the SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) for checking train, bus, boat and cable way timetables and buying tickets on-line.

    Hi

We visited Bernese Oberland in mid October including, Murren, Mount Schilthorn, Wengen, Mannlichen, Kleine Scheidegg and Grindelwald and according to our calculations, Swiss travel pass was the cheapest option.

    (http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/3-nights-4-days-trip-in-switzerland)

I assume you take into account the fact that Mount Schilthorn cable car rides are totally free with STP when making your calculation?

Our personal experience was that we could save a lot of time because of the STP. Anyway I think Swiss Half Fare Card is also a convenient option.

Thank you rockoyster. I hadn’t thought about the saver day pass. I will be arriving via train from Paris and when leaving Lauterbrunnen we are renting a car and driving to Germany.

Thank you Xmistral99. I’m going to take a look at your 4 day trip. We are still in the planning stages and with all the different passes available it gets pretty overwhelming. This group is so helpful. Thank you everyone.

    Hello Xmistral,

You were lucky to get to Schilthorn for free. Next year (2020) Mürren to Schilthorn is 50% discount only with Swiss Travel Pass. You didn’t visit Jungfraujoch which will make a difference to Theresa’s equation.

Do you know how much a cross border rental car drop off will cost?

What part of Germany are you visiting?

Maybe take a train to Germany and get a car once you cross the border.

    See http://www.myswissalps.com/ca rversustrain and http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/germany and http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/france.

    Hi rockoyster

I think you are right.I was also wondering whether jungfraujoch makes the difference.

And as you suggested, SBB mobile app was immensely useful for us too for preparing the trips. It is reliable, user-friendly and accurate.I loved it so much that I am still reluctant to uninstall it from my phone!

Unfortunately the one way drop fee is almost double the rental. Can you suggest the best train route for us to Fuessen. That is where we will be staying for a few days before flying out of Munich.

There is no really straightforward train connection.

You can check http://www.bahn.com/en/view/i ndex.shtml for the fastest most direct connection.

I would go Lauterbrunnen to Luzern on the Golden Pass route. Then Luzern to St Gallen on the Voralpen Express. Then to Füssen which will still involve a further 4 changes). There is a direct train St Gallen to Munich but I guess that wouldn’t be much use unless you chose to spend a couple of days in Luzern (or St Gallen) instead of Füssen.
