half fare in Switzerland and on Swiss-owned tracks (that means Zermatt – Brig – Domodossola)
AnnaModerator6274 posts5 November 2022 at 20:41:47 #948147Hi Zenzy,
Welcome to MySwissAlps. The Swiss Half Fare Card is valid only in Switzerland. For the journey from Zermatt to Milan, the portion in Switzerland up to the border (Domodossola) is discounted. You can find more information about the Swiss Half Fare Card here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard
For tickets to Italy or Milan specifically, you can find details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy
Let us know if you need more info.

Please do help refer to questions as below,
1. Do I require to purchase 2 train ticket? Zermatt –> Domodossola then Domodossola to Milan Central?
2. Half Fare Card 1month is eligible within Swiss domestic route, however in SBB CH online system stated Half Fare Card 1/2/3 years?
3. In SBB CH system I manage to get train depart from Zermatt and arrive in Milan Central. For this route, I may not use Half Fare Card to get train ticket discount correct?
4. What is the different if I depart from Zermatt to Brig then Brig to Milano Central?
Please advice…
Thanks!
ZenzyParticipant4 posts6 November 2022 at 10:07:12 #948149Hi 1960man,
Meaning that, I can depart from Zermatt to Domodossola (using half fare card), then purchase separate train ticket depart from Domodossola to Milan Central?
Thanks!
ArnoModerator15471 posts6 November 2022 at 10:37:40 #948150Hi Zenzy,
- Correct. You need a 50% discounted ticket for Zermatt-Domodossola and a full-fare ticket Domodossola-Milan. See “Traveling beyond the area covered by the card” at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/howtouse for an illustration of how this works. Options to get your discounted tickets are listed at https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerlandhalffare, and for Italy at https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy. In some cases you can buy just 1 ticket that includes the discount for the Swiss leg. This is sometimes called a “passholder fare”. You’ll see it explained at the Italy ticket page I linked to. See my answer under #3 as well.
- There’s a Half-Fare Travelcard valid for long periodes for Swiss residents, and there’s a Swiss Half Fare Card for tourists valid for 1 month. It’s explained at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/details. In this case they offer the same discount, so the price you see for a Half-Fare Travelcard is what you would pay with your Swiss Half Fare Card too.
- If you can buy 1 ticket Zermatt-Milan and indicate that you have a Swiss Half Fare Card (or Half-Fare Travelcard, see above), the total price will consist of the 50% discounted leg Zermatt-Domodossola and of the full fare for Domodossola-Milan. So that’s certainly an option.
- Brig is just a station on the route Zermatt-Visp-Brig-Domossola. You’ll pass it, and in some cases you’ll have to change trains there. The quickest connections require just 1 change of trains in Visp. The timetable shows where you have to change trains: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.
Does this clarify things?
ZenzyParticipant4 posts6 November 2022 at 12:13:53 #948151Hi Arno,
Yes, I still got some doubts as below,
I have searched the train route through the SBB CH and according to the system shows depart from Zermatt and interchange at Brig then connect to Milan Central. What is the different between to interchange at Brig and Domodossola? Please advice…
Thanks!

ArnoModerator15471 posts6 November 2022 at 17:37:28 #948153Hi Zenzy,
It just depends on the connection you choose. In some cases there’s just one change of trains in Visp (that’s easiest), in other cases you’ll also have to change in Brig to board the EC train to Milan. Then there are also connections with regional trains that require an additional change in Domodossola. But this doesn’t change anything about the tickets you require. Is that what you mean?
There is a difference concerning reservations though. The EC trains require reservations for the Italian legs, regional trains don’t. You can easily check this in the timetable. Please refer to “Seat reservations” at https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts6 November 2022 at 19:56:41 #948154There are six Eurocity trains each day heading for Milano that stop at Visp, at 08.33 (EC51); 09.25 (EC50) 12.33 (EC53) and 13.25 (EC52) 14.33 (EC57) ; 19.33 (EC59)
