Hi. My family will be traveling from Zurich airport to Guarda on 26 December and returning 2nd January. I am a pensioner and my sons are 9 & 11 & my partner 42. I can’t work out with all the different possibilities available what is the cheapest way to travel. We would also like to go skiing which would require using buses. Is there a pass that covers our requirements and takes advantage of our ages? Any suggestions?

Where is Guarda?

Your kids will travel free with a Swiss Family Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw issfamilycard) which is available for free when acquired in conjunction with a Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass) or Swiss Half Fare Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard).
Based on your personal itinerary you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to the “Where it’s valid” page for all available passes. Be sure to check those pages for each pass you are considering. Study the map AND read all the text on those pages to fully understand what is covered by the respective pass.
That is amazing info, thank you so much. If you dont know Guarda you need to. It is the most amazing little village high up under the famous Pitz Buin mountain. It doesn’t however have skiing facilities which keeps it quite. You have to take a bus.

OK, I see it now. I tried to find it on Google maps yesterday and it didn’t show but did suggest Piz Bruin but I didn’t know they were related. Never been in that neck of the woods. I should have checked the SBB timetable. 😉
I’m a big fan of the SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to check bus and train timetables, find fares* and buy tickets on-line if required. In the unlikely event you don’t have a device capable of running the app then you can use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B). If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions at https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable.
* The SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, the mobile app allows you to nominate whether to show full or half-fares (by editing the passenger details in settings) and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass) if that offers the best fare. The app also show a platform map (at least at the larger stations) to help you make connections.
Guarda station is on the Lower Engadine line, the third to last stop before the terminus at Scuol Tarasp
