Hello, I am planning to travel from Tirano (Italy) to Geneva in one day. Is this allowed on the Swiss Rail Pass?

Thanks

Hello LynneH,

Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thank you for your question. Just so we are on the same page, is it the Swiss Travel Pass that you will be buying for this trip and is it also the Bernina Express that you are intending to board from Tirano?

If it is indeed the Swiss Travel Pass, yes, Tirano to Geneva will be covered. See the coverage map here: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity

Assuming you are taking the Bernina Express, you will need to make a reservation for your seat. More information here:

I hope this helps, feel free to reach out with any further questions.

Kind regards,

Yolanda

Thanks for your reply Yolanda!

I am now actually looking at the Interrail One Country pass and wondering if that will cover Tirano to Geneva. Do you know?

I can see Tirano is covered under the Swiss system, but I wasn't totally sure if it's okay to start in Italy (Tirano).

Yes, planning to take the Bernina route but not actually the Bernina Express, just a local regular train on the same tracks. Does that make sense? From what I have read I don't think I need a seat reservation (07:41 train on 08 April)

Tirano is located 2.5km from the border with Switzerland but due to geography the Bernina Railway was built to serve the large town of Tirano as a logical terminus. So although Tirano is indeed in Italy, the railway is owned by Switzerland and so Swiss railway tickets are valid.

All trains on the Bernina Railway can be boarded without a reservation since even those branded Bernina Express (with the reservation Obligatory panorama carriages) are pulled by traction units with unreserved passenger accommodation available (and opening windows)

Hi LynneH,

Yes, the Interrail Switzerland Pass is valid on the Bernina railway route. No reservation is needed if you are travelling on the regular trains. You can vie the Interrail coverage here: www.myswissalps.com/interrailglobalpass/validity

If you're planning to travel for just one day from Tirano to Geneva, you might want to consider purchasing a Saver Day Pass instead. You can find details here: www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass. You can use the SBB timetable to check train schedules: www.myswissalps.com/timetable

Regards,

Anna
