Our family will be 2 adults, 1 junior and 2 children. We are scheduled to arrive in Zurich on a Thursday afternoon, assuming we make our connecting flight in Iceland. We fly back out of Zurich on the following Friday. We will be staying with friends near Bern. I was told by a coworker that Icelander likes to “force” stopovers by missing the connecting flights, so I’m thinking about waiting to by my 8 day travel pass until we get there.

    1) is that a reasonable thing to get there?

If we were to arrive late, then we would not miss on day of our pass. If we don’t arrive late, all the better.

    My next question is

2)if we arrive as scheduled and we get our pass, we will need to buy a point to point ticket to get back to Zurich on our way home. Do we need to purchase tickets for the children or do they ride free with us?

I feel like the 15 day pass would be too much of a waste if we purchased that, just to get a one way ride to Zurich.

    thank you for your advice!

    Hi Sjane,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.com.

You can certainly purchase the Swiss Travel Pass from the train station at the airport if that works better for you. The advantage of buying it online is it will be delivered to you in pdf by email, and you can print and keep a copy as backup as well, just in case. Also, you save time queueing up at the ticket counter. More details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/wheretobuy and http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price.

How old are your children? Kids under 6 travel free on all public transport, and kids 6-15 travel along free with the Swiss Family Card, which is given complimentary when you purchase the Swiss Travel Pass. More details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass

Without a railpass, kids 6-15 pay half price of the normal train fare. http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/discounts

    Regards,

    Anna

The kids are 17, 15 and 13. As I mentioned, my concern is buying the 8 day pass to start on the day we arrive but missing that day due to flight delays. I guess we could buy them with start a day later and buy our tickets to Bern as point to point, but having never used the train, I’m afraid we’d mess it up. So if we don’t have a family pass, the younger two are half price even if they are with us? Can you get a family pass if you don’t have any other sort of pass along with it?

    Thank you!

    Hi Sjane,

If you’re worried about flight delays, it makes sense to start your Swiss Travel Pass a day later. And yes, without a family pass, kids 6-15 pay half of the regular fare. The Swiss Family Card is only available for travellers who purchase one of the Swiss Travel System railpasses.

It’s fairly easy to travel on Swiss trains as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/howtotravel

    Hope that helps!

    Regards,

    Anna
