    Dear Friends,

Just wanted to check is it worth to buy Swiss Travel Pass 4days or 8 days for us as an outsider . Do we need to buy tickets along with the travel pass. Or it is better to straight away buy tickets. Please advise.

Planing to come 5 days with family and stay in Luzern and cover tour from there.

    Hello Vicky05, welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

Which pass is best, depends on all details of your itinerary. If you want to make sure which option is most economical, you’d best make calculations as explained at http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses. In general: yes, a rail pass is nearly always much more cost effective than buying regular train tickets. That will surely go for a 5 day stay in Lucerne as well.

If you don’t plan any long or expensive trips on either your 1st or last day, a 4 day Swiss Travel Pass makes sense: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass. For the non-covered day, you can get either regular tickets (http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland) or a Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass).

The price difference between an 8 day and a 4 day Swiss Travel Pass is CHF 137 (2nd class). So if you’ll be making a trip worth this amount per person on your 1st or last day, an 8 day pass might be better. CHF 137 may seem like a huge amount, but you can certainly get there if your plans include a longer train trip and/or an expensive mountain excursion.

There are more options, such as the Tell-Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/tellpass). This does limit you to the Lake Lucerne area though, and you’ll have less flexibility to travel to other regions (which can be nice if local weather circumstances aren’t great).

I hope this gets you started. Let us know in case you have further questions!

    Hi Vicky05,

Unfortunately not, the Swiss Travel Pass is only valid in Switzerland. Only a few train and bus routes crossing the border allow free traveling. Examples are Basel to EuroAirport (France) and Martigny to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (France). You will find more information on the following link: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity

    Hope this helps!

    Greetings, Sara

    Hi Sara,

    Welcome as a new Moderator.

I’m sure I read somewhere that the French leg of the Mont Blanc Express route between Martigny and Chamonix is being removed from the Swiss Travel Pass coverage for 2021. Not sure where I read it but it may have been MySwissAlps!

    Greetings, Andrew

Hi Andrew, thanks for the heads-up! You’re correct, and you may be referring to this thread in which we announce rail pass changes for 2021: http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/overview-of-the-swiss-travel-system-passes-in-2021. The line Le Châtelard-Chamonix won’t be covered anymore then, but for now the situation as described by Sara still applies. Overall, this won’t affect validity for the main train routes between Switzerland and Paris. Our Swiss Travel Pass page and other rail pass pages will be adjusted near/in the new year!
