I will be getting a Swiss Travel Pass. I will be using the pass on one day to travel by boat from Luzern to Flüelen. Then board InterRegio 2319 to Tenero and RegioExpress 25525 to Monza and finally on to Varenna.

My question is concerning InterRegio 2319. This appears to be an Italian train, though I am not sure. Does the Swiss Travel pass cover this train to the border even though it may be an Italian train? Do I need to purchase a ticket from Chiasso or the first Italian city of Como S Giovani to Varenna?

the other option is get off and Lugano and take the bus to Managgio which I assume would be covered, although there does not seem to be a way to just reserve a seat on the bus using SBB app.

    amy help would appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hello Dnalley,welcome to MySwissAlps!

The Swiss Travel Pass will cover your ride as far as Chiasso, and it doesn’t matter if you’re in a train by an Italian company: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity. So you only need additional tickets from Chiasso to Varenna. You’ll find information about these tickets here: https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

The bus to Menaggio is part of the so-called Palm Express between Lugano and St. Moritz. It’s not the most obvious connection, as there’s only one such bus each day. The ride itself is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, but you’ll need additional reservations. You can get those at the website of the Swiss Postauto. You’ll find links here: http://www.myswissalps.com/bus/reservations.

Trusted Swiss Travel Pass resellers are listed here: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price.

    Does this get you started?

InterRegio 2319 is a Treno Gottardo train – the new fast service operated by the Swiss Sudostbahn (south Eastern Railway) company. It sounds like you may have been fooled by the Italian sounding ‘Treno Gottardo’ branding chosen by the SOB company because it takes passengers to the Italian speaking canton of Ticino (like Italy but with Swiss tidiness…).
