    Hi there,

Firstly thanks to all the people who have been replying with some splendid info in different threads which has solved half of my queries and has been the base of my entire planning. Now,

I m planning to visit Switzerland during September and have few doubts and need some itinerary advice. Hope few pointers will help me out !

    Information

Date – 8th sept – 15th Sept , Adults -2, Travel medium We will be taking a 4-day Swiss Travel Pass

8th – Reach Zurich and get transferred to Lucerne. Spend the night at Lucerne (Till 11th)

9th – Day Trip to Titlis, Evening – Lake Lucerne

10th – Trip to Jungfraujoch and a exploration

    11th – Unplanned – Options –

    1. Mt. Rigi or
    2. Rhine Falls and Zurich city exploration or
    3. Mt Pilatus
    4. Round trip to Montreaux through The Golden Pass route. possible ?
    5. a through Glacier Express– Lucerne to Zermatt: Lucerne – Göschenen (Gotthard Panorama Express), a – Andermatt (cogwheel train), Andermatt – Zermatt (Glacier Express). Spend the night at Zermatt.

12th – Unplanned. To leave Switzerland and reach Italy preferably via train. (*) Can I take the Bernina Express and then proceed from Tirano to Venice ? If yes, How? If no, then what else?

13th – Reach Venice around afternoon ? and explore Burrano and a through Boats , Spend the night at Venice

14th – Day Trip to Tuscany, Italy. Back to Venice. Spend the night at Venice

    15th – Leave Venice at 1pm

    Doubts

    1) After doing Titlis on Day 1, how different would be Jungfraujoch ? If i want to choose one Which one should I choose ?

    2) What should be the preferred activity for our day 3,11th ? If I take the Glacier express, would it be ok to travel so much with entire luggage since i’d be moving out of Lucerne ?

    3) What would be the best way to reach Italy. Route ?

    4) If im taking the train from Switzerland to Italy, do I need to consider buying a Rail Pass. I would be buying train tickets from Venice to probably Florence as well on 14th. The same pass EU RAIL would be of help ?

    5) Based on the above plan, would you suggest to include anything more / less in the trip ?

What place would be good for some adventure sports like Paragliding / Sky Diving etc. and how much do they cost approx ?

    Hi ManuJha,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps!

    1) On the 10th, your trip to Jungfraujoch and exploration, starting and ending in Lucerne, will be a long day. Start early!

    2) Can’t tell not knowing your tastes, age, resistance, etc. I would do a leasurly cruise on the Lake, on one of the vintage steamers, and forget about the Glacier Express, but it’s up to you!

    3) You can go by train from Tirano to Venice. It will take 6 hrs and a half. Use this website for international trips: http://www.rome2rio.com/map/T irano/Venice

That’s all from my side. Enjoy!

    Hello ManuJha,

    1. Titlis and Jungfraujoch are great mountains. I think Jungfraujoch is the more popular option. https://www.myswissalp s.com/jungfraujoch & https://www.myswissalp s.com/titlis
    2. For the 11th….have you booked a hotel that night? You are looking at Montreux or Zermatt? I would choose based on the need to see the Matterhorn.
    3. Where will you be the night before heading to Venice? That is the important decision. Are you in Lucerne, Montreux, Zermatt? It would be very difficult/impossible to take the Bernina Express to Tirano and then on to Venice in one day. As Snowman notes, 6.5 hours just from Tirano to Venice. You can find schedules for all trips with the timetable from SBB: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable
    4. You don’t have to take a rail pass just for the trip to Italy no. You can find ticket prices for Switzerland to Italy here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/traintickets/ita ly
    5. You’ll want to read through our page here on how to choose the best rail pass for you trip: https://www.myswissalp s.com/train/ticketspas ses/practical/choosera ilpass

    Thanks guys for your replies.

Now I have one additional problem. If I am doing Juangfrau, and not Titlis then whats the point residing in Lucerne for 4 days.

I’ll book Jungfraujoch instead of Titlis. I can stay in Interlaken – Wengen/ Grindelwald/Murren

8th – Spend the night at Lucerne

9th Do Lucerne for one entire day – Rigi and Lake Lucerne. Spend the night at Lucerne .

10th. Take a Golden Line Train from Lucerne to Montreaux. Return to Interlaken at night. Can Wengen be the base for Interlaken.?

11th. Excursion to Jungfrau from Interlaken. Spend the night at Interlaken. Wengen again?

12th – Do some thing near Interlaken – Either lake Thun with some other areas like Grindelwald/Murren

    OR

Can take the Glacier express and reach Zermatt. Shall I go To Lucerne then – Göschenen then Andermatt and then Zermatt. Is it worth going in the opposite direction then coming to Zermatt?

Pls suggest what to do on this day considering the fact that I would be leaving to Venice. Zermatt is being considered as it is more closer to Italy.

Kindly suggest what to do on this day !

    13th – Reach Venice.

    14th- Tuscany trip.

< If I am doing Jungfrau, and not Titlis then whats the point residing in Lucerne for 4 days. >

    Precisely.

10th Lucerne-Montreux via GPL is a 4hrs, 13 minutes ride (one way). Take some sandwiches… Wengen instead of Interlaken, sure, you have the choice (for the 10th and the 11th) Add 44 minutes from Interlaken Ost..

12th Zermatt: there is a link to the train timetables on this site. Check it out. Sure, to go to Venice Zermatt is a good starting point. There are direct trains to Venice from Brig. If you spend the night in Brig stay at the Good Night Inn (my advice!).

Is there anything to do in Tirano ? Apart from the fact that i can reach there using Bernina Express.

<<<<<<<<<<< For the 11th….have you booked a hotel that night? You are looking at Montreux or Zermatt? I would choose based on the need to see the Matterhorn.

NO Hotel booked yet. I will take through Air Bnbs once the itinerary is finalised

This is what is yet to be decided. From Lucerne also I can get a train to Venice for almost same number of hours.

Jungfrau done and hence not much interested in Matterhorn. I’ll have to shell out Extra bucks too.

Tirano is an Alpine tourist town. Like Interlaken, smaller. But it’s Italien, so it’s different.

All three mountain railway lines are interesting, so take the one that goes where you want to. Golden Pass is the least spectacular of the three. But the alternative route from Lucerne to Montreux, while taking less time, will involve changing trains several times, as a section of the Berne-Lausanne line is phased out this summer for construction works (the timetable on the site takes that into account; the alternative route is Lucerne-Bern-Fribourg-Vevey-Montreux).

It seems the Golden Pass fits into your plans best. You could also do the Bernina Express (a more classic panoramic Swiss train) on your way to Venice but I’d be in or close to Chur the night before as it will be a long day of travel.

    Looks pretty good.

We aren’t Italian experts here but I’d re-think St. Moritz to Tuscany and then Venice in 2 days (too much travel) but this isn’t the forum to discuss it.

As for Gundlischwand, it is a village that is part of / next to Zweilütschinen which is ok as a connection to the Jungfrau Region but a very small village. Personally, I might try to stay somewhere a little bigger either closer to the Jungfrau villages or closer to Interlaken. Did you find a good accommodation option there?

    Hi Lucas,

    Thanks for that.

    .

8th- Land in zurich, Transfer to Interlaken.

9th – Day trip to Jungfrau

10th – Day trip to lake lucerne and Rigi

11th – Leave from Interlaken to Zermatt. Matterhorn. Spend the night at Zermatt.

12th – Check out from Zermatt, Take Glacier express ar 0952 hrs. Spend the night at St morit or near by.

13th – Check out from Moritz and take a train to Venice. Roam around Venice.

    14th -Day trip to Tuscany.

15th – Fly out of Venice.

Rectified the error regarding trip to Italy. I guess this would be doable.

In Gundlischwand, I was getting a good deal on AirBnb which is gone now. I’ll have to search for new homes. Can you help me with few more details when you say

    >>>little bigger either closer to the Jungfrau villages or closer to Interlaken.>>>

As Wengen/Grindelwald is a big area any particular thing/place should be a criteria before booking. ?

    Hi ManuJha,

I meant that most people would stay in a little larger village closer to the mountains, like Wengen or Grindelwald or they stay in the biggest town, Interlaken. Some people prefer the smaller villages in the mountains, while others prefer the Interlaken (which has more amenities, shops, restaurants and better train connections around the region). https://www.myswissalp s.com/interlaken

I’d suggest one of the villages like Grindelwald or Wengen.
We don’t recommend AirBnB here (https://www.myswissalps.com/accommodation/airbnb)

but we do have a list of hotel suggestions for towns in the Jungfrau region here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/jungfrauregion/hotels

Thanks again. I have chosen Wengen as of now.

Now that I have my itinerary sorted, I have few more questions.

Q1. I am ending my trip of Glacier Express in St. moritz which I’ll reach around 5 pm. Now how to utilise the time after that ? Where should I keep my base for that night considering I am leaving for Italy the next day (Milan or Venice) ?. St moritz has very less options. Chur / Tirano ? No trains to Tirano from Moritz afte 4.48 pm Which is highly unlikely that i’d be able to catch.

Q2 Its highly unlikely that I’ll do Matterhorn in Zermatt. What are the other options in Nearby region. Is there any Chocolate factory/ Dairy farm which I can visit apart from village visits. What should I keep in mind if I am to go to Herbriggen or Furi villages ?

Q3 Considering that I am buying Swiss Travel Pass and I need to reserve seats in Glacier Express. Where do I mention that I have a pass already and just want to reserve or am I missing something?

Q4 Is there any dairy farm near Interlaken/Wengen/Lauterbrunnen ?

    1. There are trains to Tirano after 16:48. Check the timetable here: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable – There are quite a few hotels in St. Moritz, but if they don’t suit you I’d look to Tirano. Chur is backtracking too much I think.
    2. Well you can’t do the Matterhorn unless you are a professional mountaineer. 🙂 You could visit other mountains in Zermatt though – noted here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/zermatt/activities
    3. You can make reservations for the Glacier Express with your Swiss Travel Pass here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/glacierexpress/p ackages
    4. Yes, there are some details and a list here: http://www.interlaken. ch/en/farm-visits-interlaken.html
