Switzerland late November, base towns for 4 days?
-
We are planning a trip to Switzerland in late November (21st-27th) this year.
We will be arriving via plane from Athens. We are planning to arrive in Zurich on the 21st. We plan to stay in Zurich 2 evenings visiting a friend and enjoying the Christmas Market. We then plan to go to Grindelwald and/or Wengen via train. We love the small, cozy, mountain village feel. We’re also considering a night or stop in Lucerne along the way.
We’re not really into taking long hikes or doing any type of extreme sports. We enjoy exploring small towns, shopping, stopping for a drink, fun dinner places, and beautiful scenery – mostly reached via cable cars, trains, etc. After Wengen/Grindelwald we are planning to take the train to Zermatt for a couple nights. We then plan to take the train back to Zurich for our flight home on Nov 27.
Any advice you can provide regarding the locations mentioned above, or alternate stops, and train passes, if recommended, would be appreciated. We realize that Nov isn’t the best time to visit some of these mountain communities with cable cars and other transportation options closed for maintenance and some hotels being closed as well. We can be flexible with the locations we visit or adjusting our stops in a different order if weather becomes an issue.
The mountain communities we mentioned (Grindelwald, Wengen, and Zermatt) truly excite us, but if there’s too much of the community that is closed and not much at all open that time of year, we will likely need to adjust our thinking. Any suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
