No photograph this time. Just a fill in the blanks. The cantons of _______ and ______ will be making a slight adjustment to their cantonal border as _____ square metres will be added to the territory of the commune of _____ and the same number of square metres will be subtracted from the territory of the commune of _____, all this because of the projected renovation and enlargement of a building on the ______. How many people can get all six answers ? Answers tomorrow, unless Victoria or somebody else provides them sooner than this.

Here are the answers (in bold): The cantons of Berne and Obwald will be making a slight adjustment to their cantonal border as 1531 square metres will be added to the territory of the commune of Innertkirchen and the same number of square metres will be subtracted from the territory of the commune of Engelberg, all this because of the projected renovation and enlargement of a building on the Titlis (actually the Klein Titlis)

The reason for this is that according to Bernese law a building cannot cross over their border, and since the projected expansion of the building on the Klein Titlis would have crossed into Bernese territory, the solution was to transfer 1531 square metres of the area of Innertkirchen BE adjacent to the Titlis to Engelberg OB, and then transfer an equal amount of Engelberg OB (further west) to Innertkirchen BE. See the attached map (c/0 SwissTopo). Given that these are small unsettled areas, everybody should be happy. Did they need a referendum?

    Hello,

Are you referring to an Swiss internal land swap, such as the Obwald/Berne one being discussed ?

Interesting question ! It seems that the Swiss hold referenda on all kinds of things, but I believe the answer is “no”. But I will check, as you never know.

    Hello again,

Google Translate renders the above as follows: The municipal council has agreed to an equal exchange of land and the associated border change in the Titlis area between Engelberg and Innertkirchen. The exchange is necessary because of the construction project on the Titlis, writes the municipality in its latest info bulletin. The new building comes closer to the border, which should now be laid out so that there are no problems with the border distance. On the Titlis, the border behind the mountain station should be shifted slightly to the south. As a compensation, the border between Jochstock and Reissend Nollen is slightly shifted. A total of 1,531 square meters are compensated.

The government councils of Obwalden and Bern and the municipality of Innertkirchen also have to agree to the change.

So, it looks like this was done with approval of the councils of the two communes plus the governments of Bern and Obwalden, without cantonal referenda.

Since we are now looking at exchanges of territory between Switzerland and a neighbouring country, here goes with a bonus bonus round: Name the two Swiss cantons and the two French départments that had land swaps in 1960 !

    Hello 1960man,

Just checking, is your “no” in response to my question << Are you referring to an Swiss internal land swap, such as the Obwald/Berne one being discussed ? >> ? If so, I must deduce that your 1974 land swap question involved Switzerland and another country. Correct ?

I’m not clear what your “no” to Victoria is in reference to. Nor am I clear what your last response to Victoria is about << One of them in probably the same as mine >> and then << Genève and Ain >>

Answers to the bonus bonus round question, which was “Name the two Swiss cantons and the two French départments that had land swaps in 1960 !

One was a land swap between the Canton de Neuchâtel and the Département du Doubs, and the other was beween the Canton de Genève and the Département de la Haute-Savoie. Both of these were ratified by the Swiss federal government on June 30, 1960 and came into effect on December 1, 1960. These were both very small modifications to the borders, in one case moving a “borne” a distance of 2.24 metres !

My next Switzerland quiz will involve the word exclave, so people might want to look up the difference between an enclave and an exclave: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enclave_and_exclave Something to do while so many people are staying at home these days. I will also pose a question about a place in Switzerland that was a pene-exclave.
