    Hello,

Planning a 5 day trip from mid of next week (though I understand, bit late planning). Looking around different options, but not able to zero down ideal itinerary.

We are three family members including me, want to stay at one hotel just to avoid hassle of changing hotels

Best I can come up with-

    1. Staying in Zurich. Local sightseeing on arrival day

    2. Train travel (day trip) to Jungfraujoch.

    3. Train travel (day trip) toTitlis mountain (covering Gondola trip from Monestry village)

    4. Train travel to Montreux OR Zweisimmen

OR Going to Chur and taking Glacier Express till Brig and then coming back to Zurich

Now your help is required in below points:– (1) Whether it is too mush of train journey and train cost / too mush time spending on trains (2) Staying in Zurich and coming/going to different places is good / economical option or moving around is better (though bit biased towards avoiding hotel change hassle) (3) On arrival / departure day what are the nearby Zurich options can be covered (within 7-8 hrs time) (4) Is there any important economically cover able options we are missing

I will really appreciate your input / help in planning this bit crude itinerary

    Regards,

    Rakesh Sharma

For 5 days this is a bit stretched plan. You can focus on either Lucerne or Interlaken. A day is possible to Bern or Zurich. I feel Montreux to Zurich is about 3 hours by train. So it will be a very long day with sightseeing

    Hello Chetan Shroff,

Thanks for quick reply, really appreciated. I am bit tempted asking few more queries,

Do you reckon Glacier express from Chur to Brig patch is worth going or instead whole journey need to be planned.

Importantly can you please suggest is it useful buying any Rail card (if yes then which one as I believe I will end up lots many train journeys and local transport)

Except Jungfraujoch, rest of the places temperature is 16-25 it seems. Jungfraujoch train journey is quite expensive.

    Hi

I do not have experience of Glacier Express and I am not fond of train journeys. Sorry I can not comment on this

I shall go for Swiss Travel Pass. At present you can go for 4 day Swiss Pass. On the day of arrival, you may buy 1 day ZurichCard which covers local transport and attractions and you may activate Swiss Travel Pass from day 2

You can get 25% discount on Jungfraujoch but is a very pricy attraction and I personally did not like due to crowds. You can cover some mountain excursions which are included in Swiss Pass like Mt rigi, Schilthorn etc. In other cases you may get 50% discount. Pl stick to one region. My preference will be Bernese Oberland

Hello – Thanks appreciated your faster responses, I had booked a rental car, was not able to figure out rail journeys routes etc., it was getting bit complicated for me. Anyway hope Zurich cities wont be pain driving (picked automatic) in rain (weather is not so great this week it seems).

So will identify day out trip places to visit from Zurich now for 3-4 days,

Just last things if you can share – (1) these mountains / Gondola (titlis etc.) will be operational/doable during rain (2) Is there any attraction need to be booked in advance mandatory because of its popularity in this period,

Thanks in advance – Regards, Rakesh

    (1) mountain excursions are worthwhile for visit only if weather is clear. You can check live camera online and check weather forecasts. Usually hotel receptions and employees at train station counters help in this.

    (2) I do not think advance booking is required

    (3) this is not asked but I shall take liberty to suggest. Pl use trains in Switzerland. I just love doing this. You sit back and appreciate natural beauty in Switzerland. Here journey is destination. I once convinced my friend to cancel his car rental in Switzerland. Sbb app is amazingly simple. I plan to come to Switzerland someday just to travel by train again

    Hello Rakeshaug,

Maybe you will find some inspiration in below links:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/pl antrip/selfguided

It is recommendable travelling by train in Switzerland, whereas of course it is possible to travel by car, no question. Make sure you read:

You can quite simply type your destinations into the timetable provided below to see connections and traveling times. On normal trains tickets (or passes) are valid on any connection (doesn’t apply for the Glacier Express) and you can simply board any train.

Should you stay with the option of renting a car, I recommend the following link for route planning:

Gondolas and cable cars normally also work with rain/precipitation, only strong winds will force them to stop running.

Best and get back to us anytime for further support.

Hello Steph – Thanks for writing back. Whether Jungfraujoch trains will be working this week, as it is rainy it seems there. I presume I can drive upto Kleine-Scheidegg and then can train to that spot and return back same day.

Hello Chetan – Thanks for your responses earlier

A little rain won’t stop the Jungfraujoch train but bear in mind it is an expensive excursion if all you do is get to study the inside of a rain cloud. Keep an eye on the weather forecast at bit.ly/2GmILXS.

You can’t drive to Kleine Scheidegg. The closest you can get in a car is Wengen or Grindelwald.

Thanks a Rockyo. Noted your point/risk around weather. Let me see if I can plan Lucerne on Thursday and Jug* on Friday.
