Hi, Me and wife are planning to visit Switzerland for our honeymoon in December (15th – 27th) from India. Can you please advise whether it is a good time to visit the place. We know it’s going to be a bit cold at that point of time but then the level of coldness is something we are looking out for an answer. What we have thought is that we will start from Geneva (4N) and then stay in Adelboden (4N) and then Zurich (2N). Fly back from Zurich to Delhi. During my stay in Geneva and Adelboden, we plan to visit neighboring countrysides, villages and scenic places.

    Following are my doubts:-

    1. My fiance loves car drive. Will it be feasible for us to do the same during that time considering we arent exposed to driving during snow time?

    2. If yes for car drive, what is the average car rent there and the best rental companies in Switzerland?

    3. Which all places to visit near Geneva, Adelboden and Zurich? Do you suggest us to choose another stay options?

    4. Will the weather be too cold that we aren’t able to go outside our hotels/apartment and will be just have to remain indoor?

    5. Which are the most value for money hotels in Geneva, Adelboden and Zurich?

Thank you so much for clarifying our doubts. We remain indebted to you.

    Regards,

    Anirudh

Hi Anirudh and welcome to MySwissAlps!

    1. I think I would avoid driving in Switzerland in the winter – especially considering you aren’t used to the ice and snow on roads: http://www.myswissalps.com/car/winter
    2. Taking trains will be much simpler and more scenic. 🙂 http://www.myswissalps.com/carversustrain
    3. Why did you choose the towns in the first place? Is there something there that you want to see/do?
For scenic villages I would skip Geneva and Zurich. Perhaps Montreux and Lucerne instead as an idea.
    4. No, I don’t think it will be that cold! But it will most likely be below 0 at night. Perhaps as low as -10 and as high as +10 during the day. The mountains will be well below 0. You’ll find more details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/weather/winter.
    5. If you want to stay in Zurich and Geneva have a look at our hotel suggestions here:

    Hello Anirudh,

In addition to Lucas’s useful tips: Adelboden is at the end of a valley and can’t be reached by train. There is a good bus service from Frutigen though. You can get there by car as well, but once there, there is not too much you can do with a car. It’s mostly cable cars and walking to get around. Adelboden is a place where people enjoy the immediate area around the village. It’s not a good base to explore a wide area, but perhaps that’s what you had in mind. It can certainly be a romantic place to relax. Whether there will be snow on the ground is unknown. That’s not a guarantee in December.
