Hello – We will be in Lucerne in mid March. The Gotthard Panorama Express does not open until mid April. Is there an alternative travel excursion to Lugano from Lucerne that is almost as scenic or is the normal rail travel the option ? Many thanks in advance for suggestions. Markus

    Hi Markus,

The route of the Gotthard Panorama Express is serviced by regular trains and boats as well.
The regular trains require you to change trains at least once along the way. Be sure to travel on the regional trains via Göschenen, not the fast direct trains. The fast trains cross a long tunnel and you won’t see anything of the remarkable scenery.

The “romantic” paddle steamers do not operate in Winter but you can still get an alternative boat from Luzern to Flüelen if you want to replicate the full GPEX route. Otherwise just take the train Luzern to Lugano via Göschenen.
