Hi, I am traveling to Zurich next week and will be doing two excursions.

One day we will be driving to Lucerne and then getting the Golden round trip to Mount Pilatus. Where can we park in Lucerne that is close by where we can get the boat? Also, how long will the round trip take including tobogganing? We need to get back to Zurich by 5.30pm.

Second day we will be traveling to Mount Titlis by train from Zurich. What is the easiest journey? Is there a train station at Mount Titlis? How long do all the activities take once we are there? Like the snow park, glacier etc? And what are the opening times on a Sunday? Is it very cold on the mountain?

Based on the above itinerary, would you recommend we get the 3 day Swiss travel pass?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Farzoozoo! Welcome to MySwissAlps.

You can park your car under the railway station of Lucerne. That’s right next to the boat dock where you can start your trip to Pilatus. How long the round trip takes depends on the amount of hours you spend at the top. Allow about half a day from Lucerne. You should be able to get back to Zurich at 5:30 pm. Please refer to myswissalps.com/pilatu s and the timetable at myswissalps.com/timeta ble for details.

The timetable I mentioned also indicates how to get to Titlis from Zurich. Enter “Kleintitlis” as your destination. Please see myswissalps.com/titlis for information on activities, what kind of transportation to expect, etc. This trip too is at least half a day from Lucerne, so pretty much a full day trip from Zurich.

A 3 day Swiss Travel Pass might fit your needs if you’ll be traveling on a 3rd day as well. If not, the Swiss Half Fare Card is probably the better choice. Information on how to find the right pass can be found at myswissalps.com/train/ ticketspasses/practica l/chooserailpass

You could save the hassle of finding parking and catch the train both days. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass to use for Pilatus then the return train trip Zurich – Luzern – Zurich won’t cost you any extra and the driver will get to enjoy the views. Just a suggestion.

I agree. The motorway Zurich – Lucerne is pretty busy and driving in larger towns like Zurich and Lucerne is not pleasant nor quick. Both trips are easy by train.

Thank you everyone for your tips and advice!

We’re actually going to drive to Titlis one day and second day will get the train to Lucerne and do the golden trip to Pilatus. From Zurich, where should we enter as our destination for Titlis? Is it Engelberg? Also, where is easiest to park around there?

Since we are only traveling on the train one day, is it still worth getting the Swiss pass do you think?

The weather is predicted to rain with thunderstorms on the weekend, is it still worth going to the mountains?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Farzoozoo,

Sunday doesn’t look too promising weather-wise but things can change rapidly over a few days of forecasting.

Minimum Swiss Travel Pass is 3 – days so doubtful it would be cost effective. Swiss Half Fare Card means you have to buy tickets worth CHF240 (at full-fare rates) just to break even.

You could look at a 2-day Tell Pass http://www.myswissalps.com/te llpass which might save a bit on full fare Titlis and Pilatus. You’d have to do the sums. You would still need a ticket for Zurich – Luzern return.

    For parking see http://www.skiresort.info/ski -resort/titlis-engelberg/test-result/arrival-parking/
