Does anyone have any suggestions for driving this route with one or maybe two overnight hotel stops on the way? This would be in early/mid August 2015. This is my first road trip in the region and we want too make the most of this section of our holiday. A combination of driving and sightseeing. St Moritz seems to be an option.

    thanks a lot,

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

There are various options. For example: drive from the Stelvio Pass to Santa Maria Val Müstair and across the Ofen Pass and the National Park (there’s a museum in Zernez) to St. Moritz. You can stay in St. Moritz (see the link) or various towns along the way such as Surlej (where the cable car to Mount Corvatsch departs) Celerina, Samedan, etc.

Then the next day drive west along the lakes, down the Maloja Pass to Chiavenna (Italy). Then north across the Splügen Pass to Splügen. Finally take the San Bernadino Pass to Bellinzona and Locarno. You can drive on the local parallel road rather than the main one if you like.

Make sure to read this section about driving by car. These roads require a focused driving style. Don’t take a trailer/caravan with you.

    thanks Arno, really helpful.

I’ve also found viamichelin.com to be an excellent tool to calculate routes/distances.
