We are 2 tourists from Canada visiting Switzerland for the first time next week. We will be visiting a friend in Lausanne most of the time, but we bought an all-day train ticket for Tuesday in order to get to the Alps to do hiking for the day. We will hike in the Lausanne region the day after that, so we are looking for a different scenery. We know that not all trails are open at the end of April, so I was wondering if you had any suggestions. We are both in our twenties and in good physical condition.

Thank you in advance!

Next week is still in the borderline period end of ski season/beginning of Spring.

As such, at higher altitudes summer paths (the famous yellow signed 'Wanderweg/Tourisme Pedestre') may be closed, and winter paths (cleared paths through lying snow marked by pink signs) may also not work as they do in mid winter.

Therefore hiking is best done at lower levels.

I would recommend Zermatt/Matterhorn, but the above problem definitely applies there, although I suspect that the Zermatt - Zmutt walk will be walkable next week. If not just enjoy the short walks available at Gornergrat.

Be aware that although yellow paths might be apparently accessible, if they are officially still closed for the winter you may not get medical assistance if you try and use them and suffer a problem.

Hi Philippetei, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

As the 1960man said, hiking is best done at lower levels. You can find some trails on our web page here: king.
