    Hi,

We are 2 families – 4 adults and 3 kids aged 11 years, 13 years and 16 years visiting Switzerland in August. We have already chalked out our itinerary which is mainly sightseeing and enjoying the beautiful views and the food. I need some guidance regarding what type of rail pass to buy and the reservation requirements, if any, for our trip below.

23rd August – Arrival from Innsbruck to Murren – Will Swiss travel pass be valid from Innsbruck or do we need to travel into Switzerland and then start using the pass. Are any reservations required?

24th August – Visit to Jungfraujoch – Booking required?

25th Aug – Visit to Bern for the day and interlaken in the evening before returning to Murren

26th August – Visit to Schilthorn from Murren

27th Aug – Murren to Lake Como, Italy. We want to use the Golden Pass line from Interlaken to Lucerne on the way to Lake Como. Is this possible and again will the Travel Pass valid up to Lake Como?

29th Aug – Lake Como to Lucerne

30th Aug – Departure from Zurich

It would be a great help if we could get some help regarding time taken to change trains for the Innsbruck to Murren journey and again for the Interlaken to Lake Como journey

Hi Joy and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Indeed the Swiss Travel Pass only covers travel within Switzerland. You cross the border at Buchs SG and from there you are covered by the STP. You’ll need to book your tickets to the border town and can do so here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/traintickets/aus tria

You normally wouldn’t travel via Lucerne from Interlaken to Lake Como. You can check the train options with the Swiss railways timetable here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable

The timetable will show you your travel duration and connection times etc for all routes.

You can check the coverage of the Swiss Travel Pass here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass/ validity

No pre-booking is required for trips within Switzerland – only for international trains.

    Dear Lucas,

Thanks for the quick reply. It cleared up quite a few doubts. I have a couple of follow up questions.

Since we are really interested in doing at least 1 stretch on the Golden Pass train and the Lucerne – Interlaken route is the only option available to us, when would you recommend that we do it – 1) on the way from Innsbruck / Buchs to Interlaken or on the way from Interlaken to Lake Como (which you mentioned is not the normal route)?

Another question is how should we plan to go to Lake Como from Interlaken and come back from Lake Como to Lucerne? Are there any sections for which we need to make advance reservations?

    Thanks

    Hi Joy,

I’d to it while coming from Innsbruck, that’s the most logical way and it will result in a nice round trip for your itinerary. No backtracking. You’d travel via Zurich or Thalwil to Lucerne, then the Golden Pass route to Interlaken from there. If you enter Meiringen in the via box of the timetable you’ll get all details.

As for Interlaken to Como and Como to Lucerne: please fill that out in the timetable too, and it will show you all the options. Be sure to read the instructions on the timetable page that Lucas linked to. It will help you understand how it works. Trains that require a reservation are marked with an R. Some trains crossing the Italian border will require a reservation.
