    Hi Guys,

My wife and I are looking into planning a holiday to Zermatt next winter after covid has passed. We are travelling from Ireland and we had though of two different ways of getting into the Alps. One, going to Paris and taking a train to Zermatt, the other flying from Dublin into some of the swiss airports.

We had thought the train from Paris as we have never been on a really long train journey and would like to have the experience. So I have been trying to get as much information on times, routes, companies and costs. I have been finding it hard to find a website for all the correct information. Also the rail network in the Alps. The length of time it takes to get from Paris to Zermatt, will determine if we take it or fly. We don’t mind flying home.

We would be staying in Switzerland for approx a week and would be looking to take the Glacier express and explore the lovely towns and villages.

I would be grateful if someone could provide some information on the trains from Paris to Zermatt and what other things to do or see while in the Alps.

    Many thanks,

    Francis

    Hi Francis,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps! 🙂

From Paris it takes only 3 hours to get to Basel by TGV. From there you can be in Zermatt in about 4 hours. If you are not familiar with the timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

Swiss rail system is amazing: easy to use, clean, safe and also eco-friendly. Check this to read more about it: http://www.myswissalps.com/train.
I do not think it worts to fly from Paris to Switzerland especially if you are interested in this train ride. Here you’ll find many tips on how to choose the best train ticket if you are coming from France to Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/france.

Glacier Express is one of the most scenic train trips in Switzerland. You’ll find all the information you need to know about it here: http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress. As you are going to travel from Zermatt to St. Moritz, make sure to have a look at these two: http://www.myswissalps.com/zermatt and http://www.myswissalps.com/stmoritz.

If you are looking for more attractions and what to do in the Swiss Alps:

I hope this helps, happy planning,
    Ildiko

    Hello Franscullion,

I don’t think anyone in here would disagree the trains of Switzerland are incredible and I myself would enjoy the long train rides over flying any day.

I am from Texas and have taken a bunch of trains in Europe, mostly in Switzerland. I personally enjoy the ease of Flying into Zurich with the train station at the airport it makes it very easy to get around.

I have a youtube channel that I have been posting a bunch of my videos from my recent trips (project that I have been doing since everything is shutdown right now).

Zermatt and Glacier Express, you can’t go wrong.

Here is my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeHnURnM8i1M5QamD75ZKzQ?view_as=subscriber

Enjoy your trip!!! (P.S. I have done a couple trip reports detailing some of my trips on this forum)

    Steve
