    Greetings from Sydney Australia.

Our plan is to arrive into Milan and train to Lugano for 2/3 days. Then use the Swiss rail pass

Can one travel by train direct from Lugano to Zermatt via Locarno, Domodossola ( Italy) and.Brig. I accept there will changes along the way at the said stations

Looks like an interesting train trip, but cannot get information from the Swiss timetable via this route.

No travel dates yet due to the travel restrictions from Australia. Maybe next May/June 2021

    Regards.

    Aidan Gleeson

    Hello Aidan,

The Centovalli is indeed an nice route and fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. See http://www.myswissalps.com/centovalli.

You should find it in the timetable if you search for Lugano to Zermatt via Locarno. There will, as you say, be a few changes along the way.

    Hi Aidan,

as you are planning to travel from Italy, this will help you: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

Victoria’s right, the Centovalli Railway is the one you are looking for, see the map at http://www.myswissalps.com/centovalli/gettingthere. Then you can take a direct train from Brig to Zermatt.

Also see the validity map of Swiss Travel Pass at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity.

    Hi Victoria and IIdiko.

    Greetings from Oyster Bay, Sydney.

Thank-you for your reply and suggestions. I did search Lugano to Zermatt via Locarno, but didn’t give me a direct train trip as you described. However, at Lugano Station, no doubt they will assist with my travel. Now thinking of travel to Switzerland in May 21, and hope the weather is good to us.

    Best wishes

    Aidan

    Hi Aiden,

yes, you are right. At the moment you cannot see it in the timetable. It is not available at the moment due to the coronavirus situation and the border closure. But once it will be available again, the Centovalli Railway can take you from Locarno (use Locarno FART in the timetable) to Domodolossola in 2 hours. Then you need to take an other train to Brig and from there to Zermatt.

Weather in May in Switzerland is changeable. Although one of my favourite months, as if you are lucky it gets quite warm, around 20 degrees but you can still see the lovely snow-capped mountains. There are also many flowers and green trees at lower elevation. You can read more about the weather at http://www.myswissalps.com/weather. And also check this: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit.

    Hi IIdiko.

Again, thank-you for you information and advise. Your information is now entered into my Swiss travel file for next year, and look forward to this section of the rail trip.

    Best wishes. Aidan and Yvonne
