We are traveling to Lauterbrunnen from Zurich on June 8th and will be going back to Milan on June 12th via train. We are a family of four and have purchased the swiss card (upon previous advice from this forum) to cover our travel in and out of Switzerland. How do we make seat reservations for the in-going and outbound trips – the Rail Europe sight lists Swiss pass as an option but not Swiss Card in the reservation section. Are seat reservations for these routes necessary? Also if we are hiking around Lauterbrunnen for the intervening three days is it worth our while to get the buy one get one free regional pass in addition to our swiss cards or will we be better off getting buying fares as needed for day hiking? Thank you for any advice. We would very much appreciate it.

    Hi Ginnyf,

You don’t need to book seats for trains in Switzerland. Your outbound trip most probably requires seat reservations for the train crossing the Swiss-Italian border. You can check that in the timetable, and more details about booking seats can be found here. Rail Europe allows to book seat reservations for “pass holders”. They do indeed not list all passes, but assume that you have any pass that allows free traveling for the leg you’re booking. A Swiss Pass would in this case be identical to an outbound trip with a Swiss Card, as both of them offer free traveling within Switzerland. You can book seats and tickets via the timetable as well by the way.

I would not get another pass on top of the Swiss Card, unless you want to do some extensive traveling on the free travel days the regional pass includes. Otherwise, the discount you get with your Swiss Card would be sufficient.
