We plan to leave Lausanne in the morning on August 3, 2020 to hike near Kandersteg. There are two train routes, either change in Bern or Brig, with similar travel time (~2h25m). Can anyone share which route has better views (they are all beautiful in Swiss:)? We plan to spend two more days in Murren before taking Glacier Express to Chur then Zurich, and will transfer at Brig for sure. Thank you!

Hi Daihugh and welcome to MySwissAlps,

If you have a bit more time you can ride on the panoramic Golden Pass between Montreux and Spiez via Zweisimmen: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere. From Lausanne to Kandersteg it takes a bit more than 4 hours then (4h19m).

Otherways, both routes via Bern (http://www.myswissalps.com/bern) or Brig (http://www.myswissalps.com/brig) have highlights and a bit less interesting views too, hard to say which one is better. I would prefer via Montreux (http://www.myswissalps.com/montreux) as I love the views of the Alps and Lake Geneva (http://www.myswissalps.com/lakegeneva) from closer. You can see it a bit also via Bern, but not that much. Although if you are going via Bern you can see Lake Thun (http://www.myswissalps.com/lakethun).

Just checked the Golden Pass Line option, that will change 3 times including 25 min in Spiez. Assuming we take the 8:20 from Lausanne and arriving Kandersteg (via Golden Pass) at 12:40, departing Kandersteg at 15:15. That will leave us about 2.5 hours exploring Oeschinensee including hike up to the restaurant, will it be enough time ?

I would leave the Golden Pass to another time. The ride up from Lausanne on the main line to Bern (sit on the right) gives a better view of Lac Leman than the GoldenPass line.

Also, I would go via Bern because the ride up from Bern to Kandersteg (ie the ‘north ramp’ of the Lötschberg railway) as you might have the option between Murren and Brig to go via the south ramp of the Lötschberg. The route from Bern includes nice flat agricultural land as far as Thun, then views of the Thunersee, nice views just south of Frutigen, and the loops/spiral at Felsenburg (which includes passing the old station at Blausee Mitholz where you used to have to board a train pointing south to go north because it is on the middle level of the loops!
