Hello, we are a family of 5 travelling to Chamonix on Oct 12 . We have booked our train from Milan to Brig through Italiarail arriving 10.15am. What is our next best step for travel through to Chamonix ? We have read through some conflicting advice that says we have to change trains at various places and that sometimes the border control is at Le Cahatelard and sometimes it is Vallorcine. Also that sometimes there are buses, not trains. We have accomodation booked in Chamonix for Oct 12 and 13. I have also heard there is a free Valley pass for travel in the area but I don’t know how we can access that prior to our departure ? Is our best ticket a Swiss Travel Pass ? Is it best to buy online before we go or when we arrive ? Our foreign language skills are limited. When in Chamonix we wish to go up Mont Blanc for sightseeing with the kids- what is the best method for sightseeing and would/could we need to hire snow boots ? Leaving we intend to get the train from Geneva to Marseille. Is there a train or bus that can gets us to Geneva from Chamonix on Sat 14 th ?

    Many thanks for any assistance.

Hi familyw and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You can find your train or bus schedules for all trips in Switzerland here. Just enter the to and from towns and it will show you the fastest options and will note if it is on a train or bus etc. It will of course also tell you if there are any connections or if it is a direct train.

There is no border control between Italy, Switzerland or France (and all others in the Schengen zone) so no worry about that.

We don’t have any details on Chamonix and Mt. Blanc on the website as it is in France, but another member may have personal details for you – I don’t believe there are any non-mountain climbing options for you and your family on Mt. Blanc but there are gondolas in the area to visit. Try visiting the Chamonix tourist website here.

The Swiss Travel Pass will cover most of your travel around Switzerland and get you a discount to Chamonix – see here for more details.
