The nearest you can drive to Schilthorn is Stechelberg. You can park there and take the cable car up. If you have an STP then Schilthorn is free. For other offers see schilthorn.ch/en/Info/ Offers.

Thanks! Would it be faster to drive in than public transportation during mid-morning traffic? How long a drive would you estimate from Lucern to Schilthorn? Could we do both Piz Gloria and Zermatt in one day from Stechelberg? Maybe include cogwheel train from Zermatt to Gornergrat? Is the cogwheel free w/STP? Thx much!

I have never driven in Switzerland. Public transport is waaay too good. Doing Piz Gloria and Gornergrat in one day from Chur sounds, er, highly ambitious. 🤓

Hi Jerry,
Where have you planned to spend the night after this trip? Either way, doing both is too much, especially by car. By train you could at least have a nap or watch the scenery instead of the road 🙂
From Lauterbrunnen to Zermatt by car is quite a trip as there are sections without a road. You’d take a car train, and finally you’d park in Täsch to take a train to car free Zermatt. All of that is very nice but a full day trip in itself, and quicker by train.

We will spending 7/24 night in Adelboden. We need to check in before 21:00. How long can we stay in Lauterbrunnen valley before we need to ck-in? We are sooooo disappointed we will miss the Swiss Folklore, Alp horns and all, at Piz Gloria! That’s on the 23rd! A Musukshule Interlaken, Peter Bruhin show is on 24th. Wonder what that’s like? If only one excursion could be done, what does myswissalps recommend? Thx!

If it were for me I’d take the quickest (motorway) route from Chur to Lauterbrunnen (via Luzern). Then take time to enjoy the Jungfrau region, and do the circular route up & down Schilthorn as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn/gettingthere. So park in the Lauterbrunnen garage for that, not in Stechelberg. Perhaps have dinner in Spiez on Lake Thun, then proceed to Adelboden.
All of this would require about 4 hours of driving, so still time left to enjoy the Lauterbrunnen valley.
