Hi, we are travelling in Italy and Switzerland, and have purchased a swiss rail half fare card for Switzerland. Is there a way to booknour train tickets online from Genoa to Lucerne, and in a way that we can use our half fare card for the Switerland part of the journey? We have the same query for our departure from Switerland beck to Italy, where we plan to travel from Murren to Stresa.

    Many thanks in advance.

Hi Sandyfeet and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Discounted tickets from Italy to Switzerland can be purchased via the timetable (SBB site), but only 30 days or less before you travel. You will need to select the “Half-Fare travelcard” (which is a similar card for Swiss residents). It is a little limited buying half fare tickets online but that method should work.

Note that the “Half-Fare travelcard” for residents and the Swiss Half Fare Card for tourists are not identical, but give you the same discount in this case, so it can be used when you buy online.

The above definitely works, and alternatively you can book the Italian and Swiss leg separately. I did a quick check and found that to be € 15 cheaper, but it depends on travel dates and times. Check Genoa to Chiasso (border) here. Check for the Swiss leg here, and click to http://www.happyrail.com/en/s witzerland-by-train (select Swiss Half Fare Card as the discount card for each traveler to get the cheaper fares).
