We are planning our journey through Switzerland in April 2019 using the trains. We will arrive at Geneva airport and travel to Montreaux by bus on the day of arrival. Then take the Golden Pass scenic train to Interlaken for a 2 night stay at a hotel in Spiez to visit the surrounding area. We then plan to use the train again for our journey to Lucerne where we will stop for 4 nights, again visiting the surrounding area. We will then travel on to Basel for our flight home.

Do you have any advice regarding our train travel?

Should we book tickets for each stage of our journey or would 1 ticket cover the whole journey?

Would the Swiss saver ticket cover all of our journey?

Hi JCJL and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Unless it is a tour of some sort, your trip to Montreux would be by train and not bus. You can check connections and trip duration for all trips using the Swiss railways timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

Depending on your exact (daily) itinerary a rail pass of some sort would most likely save you money. You can’t buy one ticket that covers all your trips no. But you could get a rail pass that covers most of them (or all depending on your final itinerary).

You could look at a Swiss Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass or a Swiss Half Fare Card as well: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard (this gets you 50% off all your tickets).

In order to know which Swiss rail pass (if any) will save you money over buying point to point tickets, you’ll need to first decide on your day to day itinerary and then find ticket prices and compare those to rail pass discounts (some trips are fully covered and others partially covered). Read though our instructional page on how to find the best rail pass for your itinerary here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass (we even have a spreadsheet there to help with the math).

Hi, we are doing the trip independently, I have looked at the train prices for each section of our journey and the best option appears to be the Half Fare card. Thanks for your advice

    Ok, enjoy your holiday!

I’d recommend buying your Swiss Half Fare Card online. It can be emailed to you and printed at home (saving you time at the airport train station and giving you a copy to print out again in case you lose your pass). Have a look at some online retailers we recommend here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard/price
